A lot of people ask me if their business needs a blog. A blog is a great way to show your expertise and draw people in and then sell your services. This is essentially the purpose of my blog.
Now when you have a blog that covers a wide range of topics, obviously coming up with fresh content is easier than if you have a niche type blog. However, the advantage to a blog that focuses on just one subject, is that it will have a better chance of turning up in search results and it poses a better opportunity for targeted advertising revenues.
Here are some good examples of niche or single subject blogs that are very popular and do quite well in terms of attracting advertisers.
This popular blog (175,000 daily visitors) earns revenue in two ways – ad revenue and affiliate marketing (it gets paid to send its readers over to a variety of top retail stores). It is very niche, obviously appealing to women who love purses. But trust me, due to all the articles on the blog about purses, if you type any kind of inquiry into Google regarding purses or handbags, the PurseBlog will likely turn up on the first page.
Oh So Beautiful Paper
This blog started off focusing on wedding invitations, but now also covers birth announcements, party invitations and other types of stationery. Oh So Beautiful Paper’s revenue comes from an extensive list of advertisers from, obviously, wedding invitation companies, but also calligraphers and wedding photographers. By being so targeted in terms of its subject matter, once a blog builds a large audience, it becomes very easy to attract advertisers whose products are in that niche.
House of Turquoise
This is a very different design blog. It focuses only on home designs featuring the color turquoise or a variation thereof. Now, you may think, how many people care about turquoise? But the word “turquoise” is searched 135,000 times a month on Google, and, every time, House of Turquoise comes up on the first page. No wonder they have no trouble attracting advertisers.
FINAL WORD: If you are going to start a blog to help promote your business, consider making it about a very specific, niche subject that has to do with your business. It may help you stand out from the crowd as well as provide other revenue opportunities.
