It is that time of year when we look ahead to what is expected to be the hot products in 2017 in the categories of home decor, weddings, fashion, and kids.


Home Décor Trends 2017

  • Colors/prints: jewel colors, bold monochrome patterns
  • Materials: velvet, marble, embroidery
  • Hot products: wall murals, kaleidoscope art, rectangular pillows

Wedding Trends 2017

  • Colors/prints: mint, blush, maroon, peach, beige/natural, watercolor
  • Themes: boho, Frozen, whimsical, forest, garden
  • Hot products: Hanging vertical garlands, ornate keepsake ring boxes, cake garlands, decorative trays for favors, place cards, etc.

Kids Trends 2017

  • Colors: coral, black and grey mix for girls, Blue and green mix for boys
  • Themes: nature, celestial, puppies and kittens, woodland, lion king, owl, animal faces
  • Hot products: fabric playhouses, stuffed animal heads for wall, play wands, calendar onesies

Fashion Trends 2017

  • Colors/prints: yellow, khaki, pink, stripes (particularly in retro beach colors), pinstripes, ruffles
  • Materials: velvet, shiny fabric
  • Hot products: slit sleeves, one shoulder, pajama-wear, tassel earrings, cinch purses, tiny purses

Other Hot Trends for 2017

The TV show Stranger Things was so popular this past summer (with a second series coming out in 2017) expect to see an 1980s influence across decor and fashion. Also, if you have already purchased my 2017 Etsy Shop Marketing Plan, you know that August will be the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, the 55th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death and the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, which would explain why so many models were wearing Elvis tees at the Spring 2017 fashion shows. Expect to see more products influenced by these three legends.

Top Selling Products Online Fall 2013

I’m always trying to stay up on the latest trends and top sellers in the online marketplace. So, here is what my research shows as currently the top selling products, for various categories, from major online retailers this fall. If you have products that match these, you may want to move them to the forefront of your website/online store.

Current Top Sellers for Fall 2013

Jewelry & Accessories: Bib necklaces continue to be top sellers but more elaborate ones with colored jewels or ones in all gold or silver; large link chain bracelets and necklaces; cuff bracelets where the ends don’t meet; cat rings; stacks of rings; spike drop earrings; small purses with chain straps; bowling bag purses; skull scarves.

Kids & Baby Products:  Woodland animals (particularly foxes); plaid and nautical designs; vintage art that is personalized with child’s name; book jackets of literary classics on t-shirts; superheroes; the color grey for the nursery;  giraffes on everything.

Pets: Everything is getting fancier, from faux fur-lined sleeping pods to nickel-plated dishes to fancy food storage containers, all with contemporary designs and patterns meant to fit in with your home’s decor.

iPhone Cases: Popular designs include boho and Aztec prints; cases that look like vintage postcards; cases with a strap (wristlets); cases you can write on (to make notes).

Wedding Products:  The chalkboard trend is still very popular for wedding invitations and all other types of wedding decor as well as wood effects, watercolor effects, 1920s style fonts and gold matte accents; the hot colors are blush, pale grey and pale blue.

Vintage Clothing & Goods: All types of leather items are in demand, as well as denim (especially denim vests); prairie dresses; sunglasses; 80s punk; engagement rings; vintage toys; vintage typewriters; vintage light fixtures; vintage wood sleds.

Home Decor, Art & Photography: Images of space, the moon, constellations, and zodiac signs are all hot; typography prints are still a big trend but, in particular, sayings about family, love, home and classic recipes (for kitchen or bar art); photographs of vintage looking or rundown motels, corner stores and gas stations; embossed 3D wall coverings; wooden animal head busts; elephants; and patterns of honeycomb (hexagons) and plaid.

Selling Art on Etsy

Selling art on Etsy is not an easy feat, due to the fact that there is so much competition. However, my ebook, Marketing Ideas for Art & Home Online Shops will give you some very helpful tips to make your Etsy art shop a standout.

Tips for Selling Art on Etsy

  • Take advantage of National #InspireYourHeartwithArt Day on January 31st that trends big on social media. It is a great PR opportunity with both home decor blogs and even your local media.
  • If you have already set up a free profile on, use it to follow interior decorators and designers that may want your art for their clients.
  • Also on Houzz, comment regularly on articles that have to do with art, as well as answer questions in the forums about art, as these are opportunities for other readers to see your shop name.
  • Don’t just pin your art to Pinterest, pin a collage that looks like a gallery art wall of your art, to help upsell more pieces.
  • Businesses also need art (not just home owners) so run ads on Facebook that target dentist offices, doctors offices and restaurant owners.
  • Wear your art on a tshirt (that also has your shop name and url) and give shirts to family and friends to wear at every major public event like concerts, charity walks, and festivals.
  • Ask a local builder if you can hang some pieces in their model home in exchange for leaving cards for your shop below the piece. i.e. Art courtesy of XYZ Shop.
