Why You Should Be Pitching Your Products to Holiday Gift Guides NOW

As you may know, print magazines typically work about four months in advance, so, right now they are planning their December issues (which go on sale in early November). A big part of any December issue is a holiday gift guide. Therefore, if you want your products to be included, you need to be pitching to editors ideally before mid August. Remember, I am just talking about print publications. You can wait until mid to late September to pitch to blogs and online publications.

How to Pitch for Holiday Gift Guides
  • Email is still the best way to pitch to writers and editors.
  • Pitch a specific product.
  • Keep the pitch short and to the point with no more than three brief paragraphs( editors will not read a long worded pitch).
  • In the email subject line put: Product Submission for Your 2019 Holiday Gift Guide.
What To Include In Your Pitch
  • Indicate who the potential recipient could be, such as gift for husband, gift for boss, gift for teacher, gift for hostess, and so forth, to match any categories they may be organizing their gift guide into.
  • Mention the type of person who would like this for a gift, such as the Fashionista, the Fitness Buff, the Geek, the New Mom, the Guy Who Has Everything, the Home Chef, etc.
  • List the price as a lot of gift guides are categorized as such i.e. Gifts less than $25, Gifts to blow your budget on, etc. For the most success, try to pitch products under $100 unless it is for a luxury category.
  • Mention if your shop gives back, for example, part of the proceeds go to charity, as again, many gift guides have a category for this.
  • Tell where your business is located. Most publications want to support locally-made, American-made or specific country-made products, depending on the origins of the publication.
  • Include a link to the product in your shop, but do not attach photos or you might send the email into their spam folder.
  • Make sure your product photo is magazine-quality, and preferably on a white background. You do not have to include a photo, they will take one from your site.
  • Mention what type of business you are, such as an Etsy shop, as a lot of magazines actually have a holiday gift category just for Etsy finds.

Pitch Your Products For Other Holiday Editorial

The holiday issues are typically the biggest of the year, filled with other editorial that you can pitch to have your products included in, such as:

  • Holiday Decorating – If you have any products that work for holiday decor, including garlands, tree decorations, pillow covers, artwork – anything goes.
  • Holiday Entertaining – All those holiday parties require festive food, drinks, serve ware, glassware and table decor.
  • Holiday Travel – The holidays are high travel times and magazines are always writing about products for the traveller, such as travel journals, luggage, bathing suits, beach coverups, ski wear, etc.
  • Holiday Fashion – Maybe your products add to the perfect outfit to wear to a holiday party, Christmas day or New Year’s Eve, and this includes clothing, shoes, jewelry, nail and beauty products.
  • Holiday Cards – Holiday cards, as well as invitations to Christmas parties, cookie exchanges, housewarmings, etc., are obviously in big demand this time of year.
  • Holiday Photos – Everyone wants that perfect family photo for the holiday card (or Instagram), so it’s a great time to promote any product that will enhance the photo i.e. matching family pajamas, special outfit for new baby, Santa hat for dog, “Happy Holidays” sign to hold up, etc.

3 Ways to Make the Most of Your Publicity

how to make the most of your publicityI recently secured a feature article for one of my clients, a children’s book author, in a popular Canadian magazine called, Our Canada (a Reader’s Digest publication). Hopefully the feature transpires into sales, but there are so many other opportunities for the author to take this press and leverage it to further help the sales of her book; tactics you can use when you get publicity for your business.

1. Use Your Publicity to Get Your Products into Stores

The author had been trying to get her book into more book stores. This article poses a huge opportunity to do that. If you take your press into any store and say, “I just had a national magazine write about my product, I think you may want to carry it” (say it much nicer than that, but you get the idea) what store would say no? Press creates demand.

2. Use Your Publicity to Get Credibility

You can leverage any media exposure to gain credibility and trust with new customers who may not know of you. For example, “As featured in this month’s issue of …”. It essentially tells customers you are a player.

3. Use Your Publicity to Get More Publicity

Once you get that first press, use it to turn it into more press. For example, go to your local newspaper with a story pitch where your business success is the story, “My business was just featured in a national magazine, so I thought maybe your readers would be interested in hearing about how my small company has really taken off in the last few months…”. As I’ve always said, local press loves writing about local success stories.

Be Patient! Publicity Can Take Time

Now, I should note, I pitched this story to Our Canada magazine last March and it is just appearing now. That is how long it can take, so be patient. The reason it took so long is because they had to fit it into their editorial calendar, which is planned in advance. Blogs and newspapers move a little faster, but magazines can take a long time.

5 Easy Ways to Get Free Publicity as the Year Closes Out

Do you have a blog? Have you ever thought about submitting it to various publications who run “Best Blogs of 2013″ lists? Why not?

In December, magazines, newspapers and blogs always inundate us with stories about the Best of Year, whether it is movies, songs, books, etc. However, this presents a good opportunity for you to get some free publicity for your small business.

1. Submit Your Business for Publicity

Start with your business. If you are a shop, promote yourself to writers and editors to be considered for a list of 10 Best New Online Shops for 2013. Or get really specific, 10 Best New Independent Fashion Shops for 2013. Think of the types of blogs that would run a story like this (Racked is a good one), or even Google a similar title to see who did a story like this last year.

2. Submit Trends for PublicityFree Year End Publicity Opportunities

Were your products part of a trend this year? Well use that to pitch a story to writers looking for a year-end wrap-up story, such as 2013’s Top Home Decor Trends – Foxes, and pitch it to a blog like Houzz or Apartment Therapy. Or maybe you are part of a trend that will be big in 2014. They are looking for that too.

3. Submit Your Blog for Publicity

Does your business have a blog? Then promote it to all those blogs making up their Best Blogs of 2013 lists. Maybe yours was one of the 10 Best New Blogs for Women for 2013. Think niche for the title to better your chances of inclusion. It doesn’t just have to be your blog, it can be one of your posts. PhotoShelter ran an articles last year called, Best Photography Blog Posts of 2013 and included 10 posts in 5 different categories.

4. Submit Your Marketing for Publicity

Did you do some really creative this year to market your business? Maybe something unique on social media? I have seen articles about Best Tweets of the Week so why not 2013’s Best Vine Videos by Small Businesses or Most Creative Facebook Marketing Campaigns. Sites like Mashable and Social Media Today would be interested in stories like these.

5. Submit for Local Publicity

Never forget your local market. Contact a writer or editor at your local newspaper and pitch a story about Best New Local Online Shops for 2013 or Local Businesses To Watch For in 2014.

Not only is this free publicity for you, plus you can now use the moniker in your marketing, “Chosen one of the 10 Best New Online Shops for 2013 by XYZ Magazine”.

These are great opportunities for free publicity, so here are 5 holiday gift guides you should be approaching NOW.

Today Show– This is the top holiday gift guide that appears on page one of Google search, with 24 million visits a month.

InStyle – This site comes in second, and covers all kinds of gifts from tech to beauty, with over 6 million visits a month.

Goop – Goop is from the high end lifestyle blog, but it tends to favor very expensive products for its gift guides and typically top brands.

Good Housekeeping – Good Housekeeping is a women’s magazine has been around for decades, but its online gift guides always rank high in search. They like gift ideas for all members of the family and typically under $100.

Your Local Newspaper – Don’t forget your local newspaper. Local media loves local business, so pitch the gift guide idea to the Lifestyle editor today!

How to Pitch to Get Included in a Holiday Gift Guide

You will see the name of the writer or editor on last year’s gift guide. Provided they haven’t moved on from the publication, that is who you should pitch to. Send them an email with “Product Submission for your Holiday Gift Guide” in the email subject line.

A small tip, do not attach anything to the email as this is the quickest way for your email to end up in their spam folder. Instead, include a link to the product, pricing and contact information. Keep it short and sweet, they don’t have time to read a long-winded pitch.

Your Cell Phone, Laptop & Ebook Reader Cases

More than likely you have a cell phone and you have a case for it, but did you realize that you have valuable advertising space right on the cell phone case itself? There are hundreds of companies that will create a custom cell phone case for you that could incorporate your company logo, maybe a tag line, a website address, you name it. So, the next time you are sitting at a Starbucks, make sure your cell phone is on the table, case side up so it gets noticed. You can also do this with a iPad case, a laptop bag or backpack and walk everywhere with your company name facing out for everyone to see. Your Clothing

Maybe you can’t afford to be an exhibitor at a consumer show (such as a bridal show, a home show, a parenting show, etc.) However, you can afford to attend the event and spend the day walking around the show in a t-shirt that clearly advertises your business on both the front and back. Make sure to have business cards on you in case people ask. Wear the t-shirt for any big traffic event, such as walking through a busy marketplace, running a marathon, attending a televised sporting event – the point is you want to always be advertising. And it doesn’t just have to be a t-shirt, it can be a jacket with your logo (and url) on the back, a baseball cap, your baby’s onesie (why not?).

Your Vehicles

Most people are familiar with this one. You can put your logo on your vehicle, but you can also paint your entire vehicle as an ad for your business. The key is making sure the vehicle gets seen. Leaving it parked in your garage is not going to help you. You want to hit the highway in rush hour where people will likely be stopped behind you in traffic. You want to park in front of a busy mall or outdoor event. You also want to think about other vehicles. You can put your logo on your motorcycle, bicycle, trailer home, or boat.advertise-car

FINAL WORD: Look at what you take with you when you go out the door, from your phone to your purse to your clothing to your car, and think about whether it can be an advertising medium for you.

I constantly have customers asking me this. As I have stated many times, you have to pitch a story, not a product. Writers are looking for stories, so you have to give them one or at least put an idea in their head.

Here are some recent story ideas that might help you see the types of editorial writers are looking for, and whether  you can tailor the pitch to something you sell.

Keep in mind, if you are pitching to blogs they are currently working on articles for August, but magazines in print are working on November/December issues, so story ideas should be relevant to the time of year the piece will come out.

Pitch Your Products to be in Holiday Gift Guides NOW

Major magazines typically work about four months in advance. So in other words, right now they are planning their November issues, and a big part of any November issue is a holiday gift guide. So if you want your products to be included, you need to be pitching them to editors now (in late July).

When you pitch your products to be included in a gift guide, there are few things you need to include in your pitch:

  • Specify who the potential recipients could be, such as husband, wife, daughter, boss, teacher, etc.
  • Specify the price, as a lot of gift guides are categorized as such i.e. Gifts $25 and under, Gifts $25 to $50, etc.

5 Popular Blogs That Will Mention Your Sale

Blogs That Will Mention Your SaleHaving a sale in your online shop and not sure where to promote it? There are a variety of popular blogs that have regular features, typically on Fridays, where they promote online retailers having sales.

Now, I cannot guarantee they will add you to the list, but it is worth a shot. You could also try adding your sale in their comments section, if you see that they allow others to do it.

Sites That Will Promote Your Sale

ApartmentTherapy.com is one of the most widely read blogs for home decor, recipes and more, with over 8 million readers a month. In their online Weekend Guide, they regularly feature Sales & Events from across the country, both online and instore, and even have a submission form for shops to submit theirs. So go for it!

CollegeFashion.net is not just a blog for fashion for college girls. It started off that way but has evolved into one of the top fashion blogs, known for their interesting theme inspiration boards. Every Friday they have their Coupons and Sales section, where they post sales from typically the top online fashion stores. That doesn’t mean you can’t try and make their list. Just ask in their contact form.

PureWow is an awesome blog for recipes, fashion, decor and more. The frequently post about big sales, especially before big holiday weekends. Submit your sale to them at destinee.scott@purewow.com.

RetailMeNot is all about sales. Email their editor at editors@retailmenot.com and see if they will mention yours.

People Magazine’s StyleWatch has a section online called, Exclusive Deals You’ll Actually Use, and they do show deals from smaller vendors here. Contact the editor at editor@people.com but be sure to put, “Submission for Stylewatch’s Exclusive Deals” in the subject line.

Blogs have taken over online content in a big way. According to Blogging.org, WordPress alone hosts 42 million blogs with 329 million readers. That is an unbelievable statistic!

So, if you sell fashion, you would love to have a top fashion blog mention your products. If you sell wedding items, you would love to have a top wedding blog mention your products. So how do you do this?

Bloggers are constantly looking for new and exciting story ideas.  Therefore, the key is to pitch a story, not a product. 

How to Submit to Blogs

Before you pitch your products to any blog, you need to check out their content first, mostly to make sure that you are not submitting a story idea that they have already recently done.

So, think of something timely (bloggers are looking up to six weeks in advance) like an upcoming holiday. An example story pitch would then be “10 Great Finds for Your Easter Dinner Table”. 

Then read their submission guidelines. Typically, a blog’s editors will detail what they are looking for, and what they are NOT looking for. It is best to read this part and do what they say for the best chance of success.NY TIMES SMALL BUSINESS

Also, if they are asking for submissions by email they will tell you what to put in the subject header of the email. If you don’t follow their instructions, your email won’t get read.

Keep the pitch short and to the point. Link to your product. Insert, do not attach, a photo (it will go into spam otherwise).

I have a client who took my advice and got her products mentioned on a top fashion blog. As a result, she got hundreds of product views and several sales just in the first few hours that it appeared (this is a good conversion rate, remember not everyone buys right away).
