Big Changes Ahead for Etsy SEO Changes and Tips

ETSY SEO changesYes, more Etsy SEO changes coming to their search algorithm that they hope to have implemented by the end of 2020.

Historically, Etsy’s SEO has focused on ranking listings that use the most popular keyword search phrases in titles and tags, but also taking into consideration other factors such as number of favorites a listing has, number of five star views, overall success of shop, and so forth when ranking a listing in search results. However, Etsy has announced that they will now be moving towards machine-learning technology or artificial intelligence (AI) for search results.

(update: Etsy stated that most changes for the new AI algorithm were made as of September 2020, as to not interfere with the holiday buying season. Additional changes might have also been made after the holiday buying season ended).

Etsy SEO Changes and Machine Learning

Machine learning / AI means that the search results any particular customer will see, will not strictly be influenced by keywords, but also by the customer’s:

  • shopping patterns (i.e. the amount they tend to spend)
  • purchasing history (i.e. the type of items they typically buy or have in their cart)
  • location (i.e. city, state, country)
  • even the time of year (i.e. fall items, spring items)

The goal is to present to the customer with search results that will have the highest tendency to result in a purchase, based on what the search engine knows about the customer.

Ety’s AI search results tend to also give preference to products that:

how to etsy set etsy shop
  • are in stock
  • are on sale
  • ship quickly
  • ship for free
  • have the Etsy “Best Seller” distinction

as these factors all typically result in a higher conversion rate

Etsy SEO Changes and Price

Another major change to the Etsy search algorithm involves priceIn the past, Etsy said the search engine gave preference to lower priced products in search results as they typically have a higher conversion rate, however they just announced they are moving away from this strategy. They will now give more preference in search results to higher priced products (mainly because 5% of a $20 product is not as lucrative as 5% of a $100 product).

Now, it is not that cut and dry. What the search algorithm will likely be doing is finding the sweet spot” price point that offers the best conversion rate and the best financial return.

For example, let’s say that in one day the marketplace sells:

  • 10,000 necklaces that have an average price of $15.
  • The gross revenue is 10,000 x $15 = $150,000.
  • Etsy takes a 5% commission so they make $7,500.

Now, a slightly higher priced necklace may not sell as much in terms of quantity as it is a higher risk purchase, but that does not mean it is not more profitable. For example, let’s say in one day Etsy sells:

  • 5,000 necklaces that have an average price point of $40.
  • The gross revenue is 5,000 x $40 = $200,000.
  • Etsy makes $10,000.
  • So they didn’t sell as many, but because the price is higher it was still enough volume to make more money overall than the $15 necklace.

Now an even higher priced necklace may also not sell as much in quantity as the $15 or $40 necklace. Let’s say in one day Etsy sells:

  • 2,000 necklaces that have an average price of $70.
  • The gross revenue is 2,000 x $70 = $140,000.
  • Etsy makes $7,000

Therefore, the goal is that the Etsy search algorithm will use sales data, such as this above, to determine the optimal point where the price results in the most overall revenue. If research shows that the sweet spot for necklaces is $40, then maybe the 64 spots on the first page of search results might have 32 spots allocated for $40 necklaces (give or take $5), 16 spots allocated for $20 or less necklaces and 16 spots for $70+ necklaces. In other words, they might give 50% of first page space to the optimal price point, then split the other 50% between low and high price points. This way the search engine still targets all price points, but more weight is given to the price point that brings in the highest return.

Now, I am not saying this is exactly what Etsy is going to do, I have no idea. I am just giving you a possible scenario based on what AI algorithms are based on. It doesn’t mean everyone who is selling necklaces should all start selling them for $40. Remember, the search results will still also be customer-specific. This SEO strategy I outlined above will likely be for new buyers to Etsy, who are not signed into their account or have no buying history. For example, if my buying history shows that I only buy $20 necklaces, the search engine is not going to start showing me predominantly $200 necklaces. Same situation if I only tend to buy $200 necklaces, then why would they show me $20 necklaces? Again, everyone’s search results will be slightly different as they will be tailored to them.

Final Word on Etsy SEO  Changes

Since over 80% of purchases made on Etsy via their search engine come from the first page of results, the ultimate goal for Etsy is to make sure that the first page of results that YOU see has the products YOU are most likely to buy AND will bring the best return to Etsy. That’s just good business.

As a seller, it means more factors will be out of your control SEO-wise. You can still make sure that you are using the most popular search phrases in your titles and tags, offer free shipping, ship worldwide, run sales every now and then, maintain a high conversion rate and make sure your products are in stock, but there will be no fool-proof solution for the masses.

Free Shipping on Etsy and SEO

free shipping etsy seeHas your Etsy traffic decreased in the past year? Are you offering free shipping on Etsy? Are you offering fast shipping times? Many sellers quickly jump to the conclusion that it is an Etsy SEO issue with their listings, when it actually could be something else, such as offering free shipping and time to ship. So before you go and start tinkering with your titles and tags, read on first.

Offering Free Shipping on Etsy Helps SEO

About a year ago Etsy began to encourage sellers to offer free shipping at Etsy. With so many large retailers such as Amazon doing so, it seemed necessary to compete. Plus, shipping charges are the number one reason customers abandon their cart.

So, if your Etsy traffic has decreased this past year, and you do not offer free shipping, this could a possible cause. Let me explain. If I do a search on Etsy for “baby blankets” for example, a variety of listings come up, over 332,037 in fact. But, if I’m a shopper who cares about free shipping (any many do) I am then going to click on the filter on the left that says “Free Shipping” and now only those listings that offer free shipping  will come up (down to 81,779). In other words, it is not an SEO issue at this point, it is a “features” issue. Big difference.

Now, there is a bit of a way around this. You do not have to offer free shipping on every individual product. If you set up a promotion that states, for example, “Free Shipping with $100 Purchase” this is enough for your listings to still show up in the filtered results. Either way I highly encourage you to offer free shipping with Etsy.

Offering Fast Shipping Times Helps Etsy SEO

Another important filter you may want to look at is the shipping time. The current Etsy search filters are “Ready to Ship in 1 Business Day” and “Ready to Ship in 3 Business Days”. Etsy would not have added these here unless they got feedback that these were also top reasons for cart abandonment.

Now, if you are selling gifts, this filter comes into play because a lot of gift buyers wait until the last minute. This is proven by Google search data. For example, Valentine’s Gift searches peak on February 10th and Mother’s Day gift searches peak on May 6th. I realize not everyone can offer this kind of turnaround, especially if products are personalized or made to order, but at least it helps you to realize that your problem may not be an SEO issue.

How to Set Up an Etsy Shop in 15 Easy Steps

Just a decade ago, selling your products online was a huge hassle, but thanks to Etsy, it has become very easy. You can have your Etsy shop set up and running in a matter of minutes.

Etsy.com is a marketplace for artisans and handmade entrepreneurs to sell their work. Etsy handles the front end, which means order and HOW TO SET UP AN ETSY SHOP IN 15 EASY STEPSpayment processing, and you focus on producing and shipping out the orders.

Therefore, if you ready to sell on Etsy here is how you can get started.

How to Set Up Your Etsy Shop

Setting up your Etsy shop is a pretty easy and quick process. There are just a few things you will need to do in advance. So follow these steps and you’ll have an Etsy shop set up in no time.

1. What to Sell on Etsy

Ah, what to sell. Let’s say that you wish to sell your fine art photographs on Etsy. Great. Now, how do you want to sell your photographs and by this I mean, do you want to sell prints, on canvas, digital, etc? What about feature-wise? Do you want to sell 8×10, 11×14, black and white, etc.? See where I’m going? There are lot of product decisions to make, but you can Quickly Add Products to Your Etsy Shop.

Therefore, before you decide what to sell in your Etsy shop, you have to look at what the competition there is currently selling and make sure you have covered all of your product’s features, attributes and formats, and then some in order to have a unique competitive how to sell on etsy set up etsy shopadvantage.

You may find out that you are entering a very saturated market on Etsy, with competition from millions of established sellers. Don’t get discouraged. Etsy does give some preference on the first page of search results to new shops, and the online world is very large. If you can find your own niche to carve out, you will do fine. It does help to look at What to Sell on Etsy: List of 80 Top Sellers.

You can also find ideas for what to sell by looking at Etsy’s Popular Now Searches.

2. Choose an Etsy Shop Name

This is a tricky one because it is not that easy to change your Etsy shop name after you have registered it. You will want to keep your Etsy shop name short, descriptive of what you sell, easy to spell, easy to say and most of all, memorable! Once you establish a reputation, some customers will enter your shop name in the Etsy search box, and unless it is the exact spelling, you will not come up.

3. Determine Your Prices

Pricing your Etsy products correctly is always one of the hardest parts of the Etsy shop set up. The biggest thing to remember is to account for your labor, and then add in your costs, which include materials, shipping and marketing. Then, again, you have to look at other competitive Etsy shops and make sure that you are covering all of your costs plus a reasonable 40 to 60% markup, and that this final price that you arrive at is still competitive. Otherwise, it might not be worth your while.

For example, if you decide to sell gold necklaces on Etsy for $18 each, and one necklace takes you an hour to make, then you are essentially paying yourself $18 an hour less material costs, less shipping costs, less packaging, less Etsy fees (see below), less marketing costs, less other business expenses. Make sure that this arrives at an hourly wage you desire, or you will find yourself working really hard to make no money.

Etsy charges a 20-cent listing fee per item, as well as 5% of the sale price. There is no monthly fee on Etsy, so your shop can sit dormant and it will not cost you any money.

You will need to also set up a PayPal account as many people do like to pay this way. However, this does mean that you will pay PayPal 2.9% of the price plus a 30-cent transaction fee.

Now, another thing to consider for your Etsy pricing strategy is to avoid making one of the biggest mistakes people always make on Etsy. This is pricing your items ridiculously low because you think this is what makes people buy. It isn’t. You have to make money at the end of the day, otherwise it is not going to be worth it.

4. Have Inventory to Sell

Before opening your Etsy shop, you will have to have inventory on hand, for a variety of reasons. First of all, you will need product photos (see next point) and you can’t take photographs unless you have a physical product to shoot.

Also, customers expect fast shipping and fast delivery. If you are going to take 4 to 6 weeks to even make the product before you ship it, you will not likely make a lot of sales. Therefore, you need to have inventory on hand in your Etsy shop and make sure that your production process is flawless, your materials are readily available, extra labor is trained and you are ready to go just in case you get a flood of orders.

5. Take Product Photos and Videos

One vital key to your Etsy shop set up is to have amazing products photos because they do most of the sales job. The key is to always shoot your product photos in natural light and use a flash. Make sure you give a 360 view of the product and zoom in on special features. You can post up to 15 pictures per product, so use each Etsy product photo like an ad to sell the product. This includes adding headlines that point out key features.

6. Have an Etsy Shop Logo Designed

You need brand identity because you are competing with millions of other sellers on Etsy and you want people to remember your shop. Otherwise, they will just remember that they bought it on Etsy. There are many graphic artists already selling on Etsy that will create a logo for you very affordably.

7. Have an Etsy Shop Banner & Avatar Created

You will also need a shop banner and an avatar. Again, lots of awesome graphic designers selling on Etsy who can create one for you for little cost. Make sure it incorporates your logo and shop name. A lot of people use their logo as their shop avatar as well.

8. Write Your Product Descriptions

This can be a challenge, but you need to tell customers the features and benefits of your products, so write you will want to write product descriptions that sell. Try to stick to point form as the new Etsy layout features the description in the side bar, and point form makes it a little easier to read. Do not go on and on and on as people will not read a long drawn out description. You want to give them the facts, create a desire to buy, add a little personality and then end with a call to action.

9. Set up Your Etsy Shop Account

Go to Etsy.com and set up your official account. Etsy will guide you through it as it is not a difficult or complicated process. Other than your shop name, everything else you fill in is not carved in stone and can easily be changed at any time, so don’t worry if the information is not perfect. You have plenty of time to edit and perfect.

10. Set Up Payment Methods

You have to choose the type(s) of payments you’ll accept. Etsy Payments is the most popular option on Etsy as it allows you to accept credit cards, debit cards, and more. You can even accept Etsy gift cards, which I highly recommend as lot of people give these as gifts and customers want to redeem them. It doesn’t cost you anything.

I also recommend a PayPal account as so many customers use it and trust it. If you don’t have a PayPal account you can get one for free at PayPal.com.

11. Set Up Your Etsy Shipping Process

Shipping can be a little complicated. The best way to start is to determine your average USPS shipping cost is to base it on the longest domestic and foreign points. However, Etsy is pro free shipping, so you will likely have to offer this and then just work the shipping cost back into your prices as so many Etsy sellers do.

Make sure that you package your products for safe transport and consider the cost involved as boxes and heavy items will cost a lot more to ship, eating into your profits. You also want to make sure to have your brand / shop identity on all packaging and shipping packaging as well.

12. Set up Your Etsy Shop Listing Descriptions

Go into your Etsy dashboard and then select the Listing Manager. For each product you sell you will want their own listing with their own specific url that Etsy assigns. You will write a listing title (140 characters), add a product description (no character limit), add up to 15 product photos and then adding 13 tags for SEO, each 20 characters or less.

Then you will need to select the correct product category, select all of the correct attributes, fill in the price, add the shipping method, preview to make sure it all looks good and then hit “Publish”. Again, it is not permanent, you can go in and edit at any time. By the way, I do offer an Etsy Product Description Writing Service.

13. Fill in Your Etsy About Page

Customers want to know who they are buying from so in this section, called your Etsy About page, post a personal photo of yourself and a short bio, written in the first person, about why you started your Etsy store and why people should be comfortable buying from you. You can also add links here to your blog, website and social media pages.

14. Fill in Your Etsy Return Policy

This is so important as customers have stated that they will not buy from an Etsy shop that does not have a return, exchange and refund policy filled in. Most sellers will state that a customer has anywhere from 10 to 30 days to ask for a refund or exchange, and you can even state that you will not accept refund, returns or exchanges, this is completely up to you depending on the nature of the product. Definitely use Etsy’s automated return policy for the best success and, again, they walk you through it.

15. Start Marketing Your Etsy Shop

This is a big one. If you rely completely on Etsy to bring you all of your customers, you will not get the most out of your Etsy experience. Your Etsy shop traffic needs to be a balance from Etsy search, Google search, social media, advertising, email marketing, publicity and content marketing. A good marketing planner will help you make sure to cover all of the tactics. I also have some Quick and Easy Etsy Tips.

Great, now you’re ready to sell. Let’s see what else you need to know.

Tips for Etsy Shop Success

While it is not difficult to get an Etsy store up and running, having it be successful is a completely different animal. Below are my quick tips (I have many more Etsy Success Tips) to help your Etsy business get off to the best start.

1. Master Etsy SEOhow to etsy set etsy shop

Now, the Etsy search engine is not like Google or other search engines, it is definitely its own algorithm. Plus, it changes fairly frequently. If you are completely new to it, my Etsy SEO guide will walk you through it.

But how you write your Etsy titles and tags is extremely important as to whether or not your listings will rank well in Etsy search results when customers enter a search phrase, such as “gold necklace for women“.

The current algorithm tends to like exact word order, and repetition of main keywords at least twice seems to still be what is working best.

However, keywords are just one part of the equation. Offering free shipping does impact Etsy SEO whereby Etsy has said that it will give preference in ranking to shops that offer it. Listings that have a high sales conversion rate, the Etsy “Best Seller” or “Etsy’s Pick” distinction, and listings that ship in 1 to 3 days will also rank higher.

There are also Big Changes Ahead for Etsy SEO, so you need to be up on this topic as well.

2. Take Quality Product Photos

As I said, great photos will sell your products so much easier, plus you will stand out better in the very competitive Etsy search results. Issues such as proper lighting, being in focus, and aesthetics all play a part. A lot of sellers like to use photo mockups, and you can buy them from sellers on Etsy.

Here are some examples of 4 Etsy Shops with Great Product Photography. Plus, superior quality photos will really help your shop to get noticed by Etsy merchandisers and social media managers in hopes they use your photos in their newsletter and on their social media sites.

3. Have Superior Product Quality

It goes without saying, product quality should be a number one concern. You never want to risk a poor review because you didn’t cover all the bases. So use only quality materials, test your product with a test group before launching, and constantly read your Etsy reviews for feedback from your customers to make any necessary adjustments. It will also help to Improve Your Clickthrough on your Etsy Photos in Search Results.

4. Offer Superior Customer Service

Superior customer service goes a long way, not only in making the sale but in getting repeat business from your customers. Offer to answer questions, and do so quickly, and always find a way to resolve any problems or issues. Here are some of The Biggest Mistake Etsy Shops Make.

Finding Success on Etsy

My best selling plan, Etsy 30-Day Success Plan will give you hundreds of tips and tactics, organized in a 30-day plan, that will help drive more traffic and sales.

Opening an Etsy shop is not a guaranteed home run. It takes time, effort and following all of the tips I gave you here. But when it works, owning an Etsy store is a great way to earn a living. Whatever you do, Don’t Become This Type of Etsy Seller.

Believe it or not, it should take too long until you make your first sale. There is always someone who will take a chance on a brand new Etsy shop. Just be patient, stay the course and in no time you could be a top Etsy seller!

How to Use Your Shop Sections to Boost Sales

how to use shop sections to boost salesWant to know how to use your shop sections to boost sales?

I was advising a client the other day on the “sections” in their online shop. Sections are where you categorize your products so that customers can easily find what they are looking for in your shop.

The client had a lot of “unicorn” theme products, which is very hot right now on Etsy. They were selling so well for them that I recommended that maybe they just break these products into their own section, “🦄Everything Unicorn”. This way if this is what the customer is interested in, they can see all the products available at once and maybe they will end up buying more than one item.

So, this got me to thinking of some of my other advice when it comes to using shop sections to boost sales.

Shop Sections for Top Sellers

People tend to like to buy products that they know other people have bought as it lessens the risk. Therefore, you could make it easy for customers and have sections such as:

  • Best Sellers
  • Top Sellers
  • Customer Favorites
  • Top Rated
  • It List
  • Back in Stock
Shop Sections for Sales and Promotions

If certain items in the shop are on sale, discounted, lower priced and so forth, peak their interest with shop sections such as:

  • On Sale
  • Clearance
  • Overstock
  • Closeout
  • Outlet
  • Exclusive Savings
  • Last Chance
  • Going Fast
  • Almost Gone
  • Limited Time Offer
  • Today’s Deals
  • New Markdowns
  • Up to 70% OFF
  • Under $50
Shop Sections for New Products

If your regular customers just want to see what’s new, you could do shop sections such as

  • What’s New
  • New Arrivals
  • Just In
  • New Collection
  • 2019 Collection
  • Hot Trends
Shop Sections for Types of Products

Maybe you have distinct product offerings (like the unicorn example I gave above) that would do better to be broken out on their own, such as:

  • Ready to Ship
  • Organic Collection
  • Mix and Match
  • Choose Your Design
  • Personalized Gifts
  • Limited Edition
  • Print Sets
Shop Sections for Holiday & Seasonal

Holidays, occasions, and special events are always great as shop sections (although just temporarily) such as:

  • 💗 Valentines Specials
  • 🐰 Easter Decor
  • 🍁 Fall Favorites
  • ☃️ Winter Shop
  • 🎁 Mothers Day Gift Guide

I love brainstorming new product ideas with clients, coming up with innovative ways to market and promote your shop as well as uncover the reasons why your sales might be slow – so book a Phone Consultation and visit my Etsy shop.

How to Quickly Add More Products in Your Online Store

Add More Products to Online StoreWant to quickly add more listings to your online store?

An easy way is to simply add listings that are SETS of products. Not perfectly matchy-matchy sets, but try coordinated sets. For example, I saw this art print set below being offered on Nordstrom where you get 5 different prints in 3 different sizes but all in the same color scheme (there are a few shops on Etsy doing this as well).

Every time I critique an Etsy shop I encourage the shop to include listings that are sets. Not only do you sell more products at one time to one customer, but customers are looking for the convenience of you doing the “decorating” for them because many buyers just do not know how to coordinate items together.

This same strategy can be applied to jewelry (sets of stud earrings are always in demand), fashion accessories, throw pillows, baby items, personalized gifts, wreaths, beauty products, greeting cards, seasonal (fall set) and holiday items (Halloween set). Again, the goal is to not just put matching items together but rather like-minded or coordinated items together.

Examples of Product Sets
  • If you sell trays, create a listing that is three trays in three different sizes because people have different uses for trays.
  • If you sell Apple watch bands, sell a set in 3 different colors so the customer can swap out and change up their look.
  • If you sell baby onesies, sell a pack of seven labeled with each day of the week. Get creative!Add More Products to Online Store

There are also gift set listings and if you don’t have at least one gift set listing in your shop right now you are missing out on a big sales opportunity!

Top Searched Gift Sets
  1. Makeup Gift Sets
  2. Women Gift Sets / Men Gifts Sets (tied)
  3. Tea Gift Sets
  4. Wine Gift Sets
  5. Liquor / Christmas Gift Sets (tied)
  6. Coffee / Candle / Bath / Nail Polish Gift Sets (tied)
  7. Beauty Gift Sets
  8. Hot Chocolate Gift Sets
  9. Baby Boy / Skin Care Gift Sets (tied)
  10. Spices Gift Set

Again, offering sets is a great way to sell more at one time to one customer.

How to Find the Right “Gift” Search Phrases

by Gail Oliver, Online Marketing Consultant

You likely know that the gift market, depending on what you sell, can be a large source of your revenues. Therefore, wouldn’t it be nice to know the types of gifts and gift recipients that people are searching for that might carve out more a niche for you to target in this highly competitive market.

For example, did you know that there are 18,000 Google searches every month for gift for a 10-year-old-boy? Buyers are getting more specific about who they are searching for, what they are searching for and the gifting occasion allowing you to zero in on search phrases that still have a lot of traffic but not as much competition.

Comparing Google “Gift” Searches

  • Gift for teacher (33,100 monthly searches) vs Gift for teacher at end of year (12,100 monthly searches)
  • Housewarming gift (49,500 monthly searches) vs Housewarming gift for man (4,400 monthly searches)
  • Gift for woman (27,100 monthly searches) vs Gift for woman who has everything (2,900 monthly searches)

You will see that people also search this way on Etsy and Amazon. Better to get some traffic than none at all as the competition on the major search phrases is just so high.

More Search Opportunities

Adding in one little word can also open you up to new search opportunities. A lot more people are doing voice searches so the search will be phrased a little differently and in a lot more detail. For example, while there is a ton of competition for the search phrase, “Gift for wife with 14,800 searches each month, there is a lot less competition but still good traffic for “Gift for my wife” at 1,900 monthly searches. Again, you will see that people also search this way on Etsy and Amazon.

In fact, if you go over to Amazon, and use their autocomplete feature, you will see that instead of just searching on “gift for dad“, by simply adding “who after, you see all of these popular searches that customers are also using:

  • Gifts for dad who has everything
  • Gifts for dad who fishes
  • Gifts for dad who likes to cook
  • Gifts for dad who travels
  • Gifts for dad who golfs
  • Gifts for dad who grills

So instead of just going after the most popular gift search phrases that have TONS of competition, focus in and start compiling gift search phrases for more niche targets as Christmas is only 183 days away!
