Small Business Name Ideas: My Tips on Choosing a Name

Small Business Name Ideas

Are you in need of some Small Business Name Ideas? I get this question all the time from clients, so below are my key points when trying to choose one for your business or brand.

Small Business Name Ideas: Does It Represent What You Sell?

While not necessary, it is impressive when a business name has a connection to what you sell. For example, the business Scentered® is a mindfulness lifestyle brand that uses the power of sense of smell as a tool to direct thoughts, emotions & actions to live happier lives. So the name is brilliant as it combines “Scent” with “Centered”.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It Memorable?

You want a business name that is memorable the first time someone hears it. For example, the wine brand, Fat Bastard, definitely is a memorable name in a market where names are often difficult to recall. But there are drawbacks to a funny name. Does it make you think wine? Would you feel comfortable asking for it in a store? Would you gift it to your boss? So memorable but remember the goals of your brand.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It Easy to Spell?

If you make up a name or use an acronym, you are making it challenging for your customers to find you, such as typing your name into a search engine or recommending you to a friend. For example, the brand WKND Apparel. It does represent what they sell, but by shorting the word weekend like this, people might not type it in correctly when searching for it.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It Easy to Say?

Same issue as spelling. If the name is not easy to pronounce, you are challenging customers who speak their searches into their phones, or again, want to refer you to friends. For example, the popular appliance company Miele, is actually pronounced mee-luh, but most people pronounce it mee-lee.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It Not Too Long?

Short names have the benefit that they can appear larger and more readable on signage, business cards, labels, etc., plus they tend to be more memorable and easier to say. For example, nail polish bottles have small labels, so short brand names like OPI and Essie make sense.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It a Single Word?

Maybe you just want to take one word and make it your business name. For example, names like Target and Chewy are short, everyday words that are unlikely to be mis-spelt or mispronounced. The downside is that they can be very difficult to trademark as a result.

Small Business Name Ideas: Is It Your Own Name?

Maybe your name is John Smith and you want to call your business the John Smith Company. There can be issues with this. For example, you are now the brand, as opposed to what you sell. Also, if you want to sell the business one day, it will be difficult. And, if someone with the same name was to do something controversial, like become a serial killer, it wouldn’t bode well for your business.

Small Business Name Ideas: Does It Have Your Location?

Some businesses want to appeal to the lure of supporting a local or national business. For example, the Harlem Candle Company pretty much tells me where this company has its roots, and if I’m from New York, I may want to support them just for this reason.small business name ideas

Selling to Generation Z

Selling to Generation ZWant to know about selling to Generation Z?

In June, Etsy announced it had bought second hand clothing site Depop. Similar to Poshmark and Threadless, Depop is targeted to Gen Z, the next generation of online buyers. In fact, 90 percent of Depop users are under the age of 26.

So why did Etsy do this? Because they know how big a market Gen Z is, and how vintage, second hand, repurposed, upcycled, sustainable and eco-friendly products are the types of products they want to buy.

Therefore, if your business wishes to appeal to the GenZ buyer, you might need to rethink your product line.

Want is Gen Z Age Range?
  • Born between 1997 and 2010, they are currently between 11 and 24 years old (68 million in the U.S.)
  • They make up 20% of the population.
  • They spend US$143 billion a year.
  • They spend over 8 hours a day online.
  • 47 percent of Gen Zers following brands on Instagram in 2020 purchased something directly through the platform.
Selling to Generation Z

Gen Z seems to be the generation most concerned about environmental impact. They seem less interested in buying brand new clothes or other products as it seems wasteful and harmful to the environment.

selling to generation z

Repurposed fashion featuring a dress made from vintage clothing.

Clothing brands such as Asos and Urban Outfitters recognized Gen Z’s interest in second hand, repurposed and vintage clothing a few years back, and started their own lines featuring upcycled fashions.

Gen Z and the Home Decor Market

At 24 years old at the most, Gen Z’s are just starting to graduate college and furnish their apartments. Their desire for second hand clothing might mean also the desire for vintage, second hand and/or upcycled furnishings and décor, or at least second hand components.

For example, West Elm is featuring products made of recycled glass and duvets filled with recycled polyester. Even IKEA has announced plans for a store selling its used or second hand pieces.

Gen Z and the Wedding Market

Then they will start getting married, likely looking for products that are recycled, have a recycled component or are environmentally produced. Online stores like Once Wed exclusively sell second hand wedding dresses. Minted even adds “recycled paper” as an option for their wedding invitations. In fact, “Used Diamond Rings” has been a rising Google search for the past year.

Generation Z and the Kids & Baby Market

Then they will start having children, again, likely looking for products that are recycled, have a recycled component or are environmentally produced. GapKids has clothing distinctly labeled that it is made with at least 50% recycled materials.

Therefore, if you want to target this growing market, you will have to add vintage, second hand, recycled, upcycled, repurposed and/or eco-friendly products (or supplies & components) to your store. By the way, if you sell vintage fashion or furniture, be sure to check out my 12-Month Marketing Plan for Vintage Shops printable download.Selling to Generation Z

How to Start a Business Step by Step

how to start a new business step by stepWant to know how to start a business step by step? The best place is to start with my How to Start a New Business Startup Planner.

I have helped hundreds of businesses get started, including three of my own. It can seem like a daunting process, but you really can get things going quite quickly, as long as you take things step by step.

Where to Begin Step by Step

Before you start setting up Instagram accounts and creating logos, you have to firmly and decisively answer the following:

  • What Do You Want to Sell?
  • Who Do You Want to Sell It To?
  • Where Do You Want to Sell It?
  • When Do You Want to Start Selling It?
  • Why Do You Want to Do This Business?

What Do You Want to Sell?

If you have already decided on the product and or service, then it is a matter of doing research to see how many other people are selling, what they are selling it for, and how is your offering going to be better.

  • Google Trends is a great way to see how people are searching for your type of product, and looking at the 5 year graph to see if demand has risen or decreased.
  • Google Keyword Planner is helpful to see the number of searches, so you know the demand. You can even tailor those searches just to your area, if this is a local business.
  • Reading reviews on places like Amazon and Yelp can help you determine what customers do not like about current offerings.

Who Do You Want to Sell It To?

You have to know your customer – age, gender, city, income level, education level, hobbies, interests, where they shop, what they read, the social media sites they are on and so forth. The better you know your customer, the easier it will be to focus your marketing efforts on reaching them, since most PPC ads ask you to select demographics such as these.

Where Do You Want to Sell It?

You have to make sure you are selling it in the right place. If you are targeting GenZ for example, are they more likely to buy on a certain marketplace or a retail store or off of social media or all three?

If you sell in stores, or through a third party, you will have much smaller profit margins, so can you afford that?

If this is a brick and mortar business, as you know location, location, location, but you also need ample parking and accessible hours of business.

When Do You Want to Start Selling It?

Creating a launch timeline is critical to your success. It has to start with the product. Do not start designing logos and the fun stuff until you have nailed down the product / service, and lined up any needed suppliers, materials, inventory, equipment and so forth.

Why Do You Want to Do This Business?

Starting and running a business requires a lot of time, money, willingness to fail, so make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.

If you are desperate for money, this will not be an immediate solution as it takes time to earn revenues, especially profits. Forget those “get rich quick stories” you hear on the Internet. You would be amazed at how many people “buy” their sales and then try to use that to look successful to get actual sales.

If this is something you are truly passionate about, and are willing to put in the time, money, effort and personal sacrifice, your business has a better chance at success.

Initial Steps in Starting a Business

If you have confidently answered the questions above, then you start with the basics:

  • You need a business name.
  • You need to secure the business name.
  • You need to decide the type of business legal structure.
  • You need to determine how you will finance the business.

A business name should be short, descriptive, memorable, easy to pronounce, easy to spell. Customers will not find you easily in Google, if they misspell your name. For more advice, read my post My 8 Most Important Tips on Choosing a Business Name.

What kind of business structure will you set up? A sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation? I always recommend the latter, as there is so much less personal risk.

Some businesses require very little start up costs, whereas some will need substantial funds in the beginning for an establishment, supplies, equipment, staff and so forth. Luckily there are a variety of funding options including small business loans, grants and angel investors, to name a few.

Now You are Ready to Start a Business

Once you have those items above decided, you are ready to move on to the four P’s, which are:

  • Product – every detail including market research, competitive research, what is needed to create the product and so forth.
  • Price – what you are going to charge, based on costs and competitors’ pricing.
  • Place – all of the locations you plan to sell the product/service.
  • Promotion – how you are going to get the word out via social media, advertising, SEO, publicity and more.

54 Creative Small Business Ideas for 2024

1. Neighborhood Coffee Truck – Why not in a neighborhood where a lot of people are still working from home, especially since “Coffee Near Me” is a top Google search.

2. DIY Vegetable Garden Kits – Food prices have been on the rise, and so have searches for a DIY vegetable garden, so sell a DIY gardening kit, seeds and/or tutorials, even plans for building a garden bed.

3. Home Grown Flowers – Florists are expensive so buy yourself an affordable green house on Amazon and grow flowers for people to purchase for weddings, Mother’s Day, even poinsettias for Christmas.

4. Hiking Store – Interest in hiking as soared over 1,000% in the past year, so a small retail outlet that specializes in the best hiking gear or even selling hiking vacation packages could do well.

5. Conversion of Commercial Spaces – With many office buildings sitting empty because workers are staying home, this means a growing need to be able to convert these spaces from commercial offices to residential living spaces. This would be an ideal contracting business to specialize in.

6. Bungee Workout Classes – Bungee fitness was one of the breakout searches of 2023. You can offer these bungee workout sessions in the park and save on space rental fees.

7. Training for Older Workers – Employers have to train their older employees in new skills such as social media, artificial intelligence and more, so offer this service to local companies.

8. Pop Up Office Rentals – Offer a service to find temporary office space for employers in need, as “office space rental agency” was a top search last year.

Business Ideas for Individuals

9. Dog Trainer – “Private dog trainer” was a top search, with people looking for you to come to their home and train their dog one on one.

10. Pet Anxiety Trainer – A recent study from Finland finds that about 70 percent of dogs likely live with anxiety with not a lot of cures. Someone who would come regularly to the home and work with the dog to help it relax would be something worth paying for.

11. Therapy Dog Trainer – Consider specializing and becoming a therapy dog trainer. In the USA alone, there are currently 500,000 service dogs helping everyone from seniors to children, so it is a growing field full of opportunity.

12. Amazon Virtual Assistant – More and more people are selling on Amazon, but they do not have the time or expertise to get a shop up and running quickly. This is currently the most in-demand service on Fiverr.

13. Neighborhood Websites – “Near Me” Google searches are at an all time high, so a neighborhood website funded by local advertisers is a great way to connect people with local services as well as their neighbors.

14. Soundproofing – “How to Soundproof” and “How to Install Acoustic Wall Panels” were two top searches in 2023, so you can either offer a service and/or the product itself.

15. Upsized House Plans  for Boomers – Believe it or not, more baby boomers are upsizing their homes rather than downsizing as they want more space to accommodate live-in elderly parents and out of town children and grandchildren. As a result, the type of house has changed where they require more than one master bedroom, wheel chair accessibility, and single level with a first floor owner’s suite.

16. Errand Runner / Personal Assistant – Working couples, particularly those with kids, are overwhelmed with their ever growing daily to do list, from picking up dry cleaning to grocery shopping to meal planning to registering kids for activities to making doctor’s appointments to planning birthday parties to buying gifts for other kids parties, – it goes on and on.

17. Personal Sales Associate – What if you could offer to sell other people’s big-ticket items for them, such as like cars, boats, RVs, jewelry, and the like, and you simply get paid a commission or a finder’s fee (your job is to find and scrutinize all buyers).

18. Bargain Hunter – If you are really good at finding the best local deals on groceries, furniture, travel, restaurants,  many people would pay for a service that would send them texts or email alerts on the best deals in their city for the things they sign up for.

19. Funeral Officiant – There is huge demand for wedding officiants but just as many people want a someone to officiate a funeral (also known as certified celebrants) and the average rate you can charge is $200 to $500 per service.

20. Resume Writer – New grads have trouble selling themselves to prospective employers, so if you have a flair for writing and sales, offer to write resumes and cover letters. By the way, I offer this service for both resumes and LinkedIn Summaries (you get the benefit of a marketer!).

21. Elderly Walker /Sitter – A lot of working people have elderly parents living with them that need to be checked on throughout the day, maybe even have a conversation with them or take them for a walk. There are some social agencies that offer this service for free, but they are backed up with requests and hurt by a lack of volunteers, making it ideal for a private service offering.

 22. AI Teachers – Since July 2022, searches for information on artificial intelligence has grown by 4,000% so show people how they can use it to make money or improve their life with workshops and classes.

23. Language Conversationalist – Many people need to learn a second language as part of a job requirement. Therefore, if you are fluent in a second language offer conversation training whereby you simply meet the person for coffee once or twice a week and speak in your native tongue. You could easily charge $20 to $25 an hour as their company will sometimes pick up the fee.

24. Makeup Artist – Whether it is a wedding, prom or even a Halloween party, there is a lot of demand for a professional makeup artist who will come right to your home. In fact, the search “Personal Glam Squad” has exploded in the last two years. Be sure to check out my Marketing Plan for Beauty Products.

25. Seasonal House Prepping – If you live in a cold climate, handle people’s fall and spring house prep checklist for a pretty good per diem rate.

26. College Researcher – Is your child lost when it comes to applying to college – where to go, what to study, what they need to take in high school for particular disciplines, where to find grant money, etc. Save all the helicopter parents out there the trouble and take this on yourself by offering this service.

27. Pop-up Store Liaison – Again, act as a liaison between small businesses who wanted a popup retail presence just for a weekend or week and the lessor or realtor for the property. You make your money by getting a piece of the commission.

28. Wellness Coach – You’ve heard of Life Coaches, but a Wellness Coach focuses purely on your physical and mental health choices and searches for a “certified” one have skyrocketed over the past year.

29. Pet Nail Trimmer – On average, most dogs need to have their names trimmed every 1 to 2 months. So learn how to do it properly and then you can ask a local pet shop if you can hold trimming sessions in their shop every weekend. Typical rate is $10 per dog for about 5 minutes work.

30. Embroiderer – The personalization market is huge as everyone wants their name or monogram on everything they wear and own. An embroidery machine costs anywhere from $400 to $1,200 so you could pay this off fairly quickly, especially if you target companies and sports teams.

31. Mural Painter – So when I say mural painter, I don’t mean the murals on nursery walls, although that is a good business, but I mean murals for local companies, especially in their boardroom, foyers or on the side exterior walls of their business as free advertising.

32. Leather Repairer  – Leather furniture is expensive, and finding someone to repair it is a lost art. Lots of demand, little competition.

33. Sleep Expert – It is believed that between 30% and 48% of older adults suffer from insomnia. It is becoming a serious health issue, so a sleep expert who could help solve their problem would be a service worth paying for.

34. Spiritual Awakening Trip Planner – More and more people are investing in their mental health, so they like to seek guidance in far off exotic places that have a tradition of helping with spiritual healing. A great business idea is to be a planner specializing in these types of excursions, especially targeting people travelling on their own.

35. Personal Gift Shopper – Offer to be their personal gift shopper who also hunts for the best gifts at the lowest prices, saying them money so that it becomes a service that is really worth paying for.

36. Cabinet Refinisher – Home buyers feel badly about ripping out kitchen or bathroom cabinets due to the expense and the waste. A lot of the time, the cabinets could be refinished, so specialize in this one area, for both residential and commercial businesses.

37. Put Up take Down Christmas Lights –  Offer a put up and take down holiday lights service, even offering to supply the lights so they don’t have to worry about storage.

38. Niche Influencer – This small business idea simply uses the power of Instagram. Now, there are “influencers” taste testing Trader Joe products and telling you which ones they like, and making money doing it. So find a hot market niche whereby people want to know more about the product before they buy it, a product they can’t touch, smell, feel or taste online.

Best Rental Small Business Ideas 2024

39. Luxury House Rental – Millennials do not want the burden of owning a house, but they still want luxury accommodations and have no problem paying the rent for an Instagram-able abode, even if it is small. So, find a small duplex or tri-plex and redo it based on the top décor trends you find on Pinterest, and then rent it out to millennials for thousands of dollars a month.

40. Camper Rental – If you have a camper you do not use all year, why not rent it out, sort of like an AirBnB for campers.

41. Leisure Boat Rental – People cannot afford all the toys but it doesn’t mean they don’t want to enjoy them. Therefore, if you live near water, purchase a boat merely to be rental to those who want it for a weekend excursion, party on the water, wedding or other aquatic event.

42. Clothing Rentals – Millennials do not like the fact that cheap throwaway clothes are filling up the landfills, so renting clothes seems like a more eco-friendly option. Sites like Rent the Runway have been around since 2009, but more niche rental markets could take off, such as clothes for men, children, prom or formal wear.

43. Student Furniture Store – A student furniture store is basically a second hand store, but you could fix up the pieces for them and get a little bit higher of a price. You wouldn’t even need to have the store up for long, just a pop-up store from early-August to late-September.

44. Barn Pop Up Store – There is a farm near where I live that every fall rents out its barn to a 8 week long Christmas market. Maybe you have a structure that could work as a pop store for a variety of different rotating vendors and you simply charge each vendor a table fee.

affiliate planner for beginners45. Small Scale Furniture – Apartment, dorm room, tiny house or she shed, more than half of Americans would consider living in a home that’s less than 600 square feet, according to a survey done by the National Association of Home Builders. Even Amazon is selling tiny house kits. Therefore, start a business strictly in furnishing these small spaces with small scaled furniture and décor.

46. Comfort Clothing – Searches for “comfort clothing” have quadrupled in the last 5 years, so start a store specializing in this. Check out my Marketing Plan for Fashion Brands.

47. Home Energy Expert – A service whereby you can come in and evaluate a home and provide ways for the home owner to better insulate and cut costs is invaluable, not to mention it can also qualify the home owner for various government rebates.

marketing strategy plan template 48. Star and Moon Gazing Events – There has been growing interest in the moon and stars after the eclipse in August 2017 drew such large gazing crowds, and, as such people have been developing events around the monthly full moon from wine hosting events to tarot readings. Also see idea #54.

49. Netflix Cafe – With so many streaming services showing up on the market, no one can afford to sign up for them all, so a café or bookstore that wants to offer the ability to come in and watch on a personal screen or even hold hosting parties in a large party room, might be worthwhile.

Best Product Small Business Ideas 2024

50. Monthly Subscription Box for Teachers – We keep hearing how so many teachers have to pay for their own supplies, so why not start an affordable subscription box service for teachers with lesson plans, room decorations and supplies.

51. Monthly Subscription Box for Seniors – A lot of seniors are shut-ins and love the thought of receiving mail. So set up a subscription box services small business that their far away children (or even grandchildren) can purchase for them with monthly items they would like and need.

52. Mystery Boxes – Mystery boxes have become a new form of entertainment at 60,000 Google searches a month, so how can you ignore the demand? You can offer mystery boxes as a mail subscription service or you can do it as a service for other companies. You would have the most success to focus on hobbies and interests, such as mystery boxes for gamers, readers, makeup, and jewelry as these are the top searches.

53. Vinyl Art Posters – A lot of stores make vinyl wall decals that are small graphics or text that adhere to the wall. However, if you could take an actual art print or poster and make it vinyl so that it is essentially peel and stick, you would have a hit on your hands with the apartment dwellers and college dorm room market, who really need that peel and stick artwork capability.

54. Solar Eclipse Glasses – Did you know that when there was a solar eclipse a few months back, searches for “Where can I find solar eclipse glasses?” soared? Believe it or not, there are only 160 listings on Amazon and another solar eclipse is coming in April 2024.

I hope you enjoyed these small business ideas 2024.

How to Start an Online Business

how to start an online businessWant to quickly and easily start an online business? Luckily for you, there are a wide range of options.

Back in 2000, when I wanted to start selling a book I wrote online, it was very difficult. The only marketplace was Amazon, and I did sell there for awhile. But I also really wanted to start selling off my own website. Being a small business back then, your only option to sell was to set up with a credit card payment processor, through your bank, and they wanted $10,000 as a security. I wasn’t even sure I was going to sell $10,000 worth of books. Thank goodness, today there are so many options.

Where You Can Sell Online

Obviously there are the main marketplaces and e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon, Etsy, Facebook, Instagram and Shopify.

There are also other smaller Online Selling Sites you can try.

You could also sell on your blog, as I do, and simply use a payment processor.

What To Sell Online

A lot of people think that to sell online, you need to make your own products. Not true. You can sell vintage or used goods. You can also sell wholesale, white label and drop ship goods.

Again, what you want to sell will be determined by where you want to sell, as sites like Etsy do not allow wholesale or drop shipping, but Amazon does. Amazon doesn’t sell vintage or used, but Etsy and eBay do.

How to Start Selling Online

My 34-Page How to Start a Business Planner is a printable download, that will walk you through all the major decisions of WHAT and WHERE to sell online, including all of your various selling options.

Case Study – How One Successful Small Business Only Needs to Have a Storefront Two Months a Year

In the city where I live, every year, for just seven weekends from early October to mid November, a local couple hosts a major shopping event called The Third World Bazaar.

They reside on a few acres of farm land where they turn one of their large barns into a holiday retail space. The owners spend 5 months of the year travelling the globe buying products for the sale from artisans in countries such as Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Cuba and Vietnam. Everything from jewelry to furniture to textiles to home accessories to toys to Christmas ornaments to other unique finds. In the 10 years it has been operating, the bazaar has become incredibly popular and proves you don’t need to have a storefront year round, if fact, it might work better if you don’t.

Why Does This Business Work?
  • The owners capitalize on the key holiday buying time of the year, October and November.
  • Buyers know that the bazaar is only open during these seven weekends (Friday to Sunday), so they make the effort to get there, and they BUY, because they know that they are not coming back again for another year.
  • As they own the property and the barn, there is no rent being paid on a retail space.
  • The bazaar barely has to advertise because of strong word of mouth and customer loyalty. People know when it is coming because it is always the same time every year.
  • They have food trucks on the site, and also sell pumpkins and apple cider, making this an all-day fall event.

As I’ve said before, when something is only being offered for a limited time, it forces people to act. If buyers know a store will be there tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, there is no urgency.

Ways to Have a Storefront for a Limited Time

Depending on what you sell, there are certain times of the year when it may benefit your online store to have a physical store presence. If you sell swimwear, maybe that is May/June. If you sell skis, that would be December. If you selling wedding goods, January is usually prime time. Or maybe you also want to take advantage of the holiday buying season. So what options do you have?

  • Approach a popular local store about the idea of them hosting a pop-up store of your products for just a few Saturdays during your prime selling season.
  • Consider taking out a shopping kiosk in a mall. Malls are hurting right now, so they may be open to the possibility of just a two month rental.
  • See if there is any retail space in your area that has been sitting empty for a long time. Approach the leasing agent about renting the space for just a one month period.
  • Ask your local church or community center if they would be willing to let you use their facilities in exchange for a donation.
  • A lot of hotels and resorts will host local vendors on their premises at certain times of the year.
  • Some business parks will also allow vendors to set up temporary one-day events on their premises, if it is something that will benefit their employees.
  • If you can’t afford some of these options, form an alliance with other local, but non competitive vendors, about going in together.

The goal is to maximize your key selling season with both a physical and online presence that will help carry you throughout the year.

Unique Small Business Idea – Wine & Canvas

by Gail Oliver, Small Business Marketing Consultant

I saw an interesting business on the news the other day and thought it might be inspiration for other small business owners out there.

Unique small business ideas

Wine & Canvas Mobile Art Lessons

Wine & Canvas is a mobile business that hosts painting events at various local establishments, such as bars and restaurants, and it is packing them in!

People are looking for different forms of entertainment these days, as well as new social opportunities, and Wine & Canvas presents a great one. Customers get an art lesson alongside having a drink and socializing with friends and other painters (they also get to leave with their artwork).

It benefits the host restaurant as it provides an opportunity to bring in customers on their typically slower nights. As for Wine & Canvas, not only do they offer a unique event, but they also have minimal overhead costs as they do not have to pay for a hosting facility. Wine & Canvas makes money from the class fee, and the restaurant makes money selling food and drinks. It’s a win-win for both businesses.

How This Idea Can Inspire Your Business

If you are an artist of any kind, teaching is always a great way to have a second revenue stream, as well as introduce yourself to new potential customers.

If you are a store front, restaurant or other type of retail establishment, think of what types of complimentary businesses you can bring in for select events that will introduce your business to their customers and help you through those slower times.

5 Ways to Find an Idea for Your Own Small Business

How to Find a Small Business IdeaWant to know how to find a small business idea?

I am also an expert contributor at the #1 women’s lifestyle website, SheKnows.comread by more than 40 million women each month, and here is my first article for them (plus you can read it below): 5 Ways to Find an Idea for Your Own Business.

Do What You Like to Do (And Are Good At)

Everyone will tell you to follow your passion, but I like to add to that; it also has to be something you’re good at. For example, a lot of people love to sing, but if they are not good at it they won’t earn a living doing it. So find what you love to do and are good at, then determine if there is a way to make money doing it.

Listen To Those Compliments

Sometimes the best way to find out what you are good at is to listen to what people compliment you on. Maybe it is your sense of style, your cooking or your photography skills. If they like it, chances are other people will too.

Look At Your Own Needs

Another great way to find an idea for a business is to look at your own recent needs for a product or service. Were you unable to find what you wanted? Maybe others are looking for the same things you are. Where there is demand, there is opportunity.

See What People Are Searching For

Go to one of the question and answer websites like Quora, and type in “where can I find x.” The results are fascinating, everything from “where can I buy a stylish bike helmet?” to “where can I find someone to practice Spanish with?” You can even narrow it down to the city you live in, for example, “where can I find x in Seattle?” It’s a great way to get an idea of people’s current wants and needs and see if you can build a business around it.new business ideas

Read Product and Business Reviews

An interesting way to find an idea for a business is to read reviews of products and services on sites like Amazon and Yelp to see customer complaints about the ways these businesses are lacking. Capitalizing on a popular product or service’s weaknesses presents an opportunity for you.

If you have the entrepreneurial spirit, chances are there is a small business idea right for you; you just have to find it.

On my blog I focus on giving advice to help market and promote your small business. However, over at SheKnows.com I will be writing about topics related to starting and running a small business or becoming an entrepreneur, so I hope you will follow me over there!
