Google Tip for Your Site’s Title Tag HTML SEO

title tag html seoUnderstanding how to write your site’s title tag HTML SEO is important.

The title tag is the line that you fill in, in your settings, that describes what your site is all about. After your url, it is the second thing Google reads.

Google only reads the first 55 characters of your website’s title tag, make sure that you list what your business does first, and then your business name second. Most people do it the other way around, and it is a mistake.

For example, if you are a realtor in Pasadena, California, your website’s title tag should be:

Top Real Estate Agent Pasadena California | Jane Doe Realty

Also include your city in your title tag if the majority of your business is local.

If you are an online wedding store, your website’s title tag should be:

Wedding Dresses & Bridal Gowns Online | The Bridal Shop

Again, make your title tag descriptive of what you sell, including at least one of the most searched adjectives for what you sell.

Big Changes Ahead for Etsy SEO Changes and Tips

ETSY SEO changesYes, more Etsy SEO changes coming to their search algorithm that they hope to have implemented by the end of 2020.

Historically, Etsy’s SEO has focused on ranking listings that use the most popular keyword search phrases in titles and tags, but also taking into consideration other factors such as number of favorites a listing has, number of five star views, overall success of shop, and so forth when ranking a listing in search results. However, Etsy has announced that they will now be moving towards machine-learning technology or artificial intelligence (AI) for search results.

(update: Etsy stated that most changes for the new AI algorithm were made as of September 2020, as to not interfere with the holiday buying season. Additional changes might have also been made after the holiday buying season ended).

Etsy SEO Changes and Machine Learning

Machine learning / AI means that the search results any particular customer will see, will not strictly be influenced by keywords, but also by the customer’s:

  • shopping patterns (i.e. the amount they tend to spend)
  • purchasing history (i.e. the type of items they typically buy or have in their cart)
  • location (i.e. city, state, country)
  • even the time of year (i.e. fall items, spring items)

The goal is to present to the customer with search results that will have the highest tendency to result in a purchase, based on what the search engine knows about the customer.

Ety’s AI search results tend to also give preference to products that:

how to etsy set etsy shop
  • are in stock
  • are on sale
  • ship quickly
  • ship for free
  • have the Etsy “Best Seller” distinction

as these factors all typically result in a higher conversion rate

Etsy SEO Changes and Price

Another major change to the Etsy search algorithm involves priceIn the past, Etsy said the search engine gave preference to lower priced products in search results as they typically have a higher conversion rate, however they just announced they are moving away from this strategy. They will now give more preference in search results to higher priced products (mainly because 5% of a $20 product is not as lucrative as 5% of a $100 product).

Now, it is not that cut and dry. What the search algorithm will likely be doing is finding the sweet spot” price point that offers the best conversion rate and the best financial return.

For example, let’s say that in one day the marketplace sells:

  • 10,000 necklaces that have an average price of $15.
  • The gross revenue is 10,000 x $15 = $150,000.
  • Etsy takes a 5% commission so they make $7,500.

Now, a slightly higher priced necklace may not sell as much in terms of quantity as it is a higher risk purchase, but that does not mean it is not more profitable. For example, let’s say in one day Etsy sells:

  • 5,000 necklaces that have an average price point of $40.
  • The gross revenue is 5,000 x $40 = $200,000.
  • Etsy makes $10,000.
  • So they didn’t sell as many, but because the price is higher it was still enough volume to make more money overall than the $15 necklace.

Now an even higher priced necklace may also not sell as much in quantity as the $15 or $40 necklace. Let’s say in one day Etsy sells:

  • 2,000 necklaces that have an average price of $70.
  • The gross revenue is 2,000 x $70 = $140,000.
  • Etsy makes $7,000

Therefore, the goal is that the Etsy search algorithm will use sales data, such as this above, to determine the optimal point where the price results in the most overall revenue. If research shows that the sweet spot for necklaces is $40, then maybe the 64 spots on the first page of search results might have 32 spots allocated for $40 necklaces (give or take $5), 16 spots allocated for $20 or less necklaces and 16 spots for $70+ necklaces. In other words, they might give 50% of first page space to the optimal price point, then split the other 50% between low and high price points. This way the search engine still targets all price points, but more weight is given to the price point that brings in the highest return.

Now, I am not saying this is exactly what Etsy is going to do, I have no idea. I am just giving you a possible scenario based on what AI algorithms are based on. It doesn’t mean everyone who is selling necklaces should all start selling them for $40. Remember, the search results will still also be customer-specific. This SEO strategy I outlined above will likely be for new buyers to Etsy, who are not signed into their account or have no buying history. For example, if my buying history shows that I only buy $20 necklaces, the search engine is not going to start showing me predominantly $200 necklaces. Same situation if I only tend to buy $200 necklaces, then why would they show me $20 necklaces? Again, everyone’s search results will be slightly different as they will be tailored to them.

Final Word on Etsy SEO  Changes

Since over 80% of purchases made on Etsy via their search engine come from the first page of results, the ultimate goal for Etsy is to make sure that the first page of results that YOU see has the products YOU are most likely to buy AND will bring the best return to Etsy. That’s just good business.

As a seller, it means more factors will be out of your control SEO-wise. You can still make sure that you are using the most popular search phrases in your titles and tags, offer free shipping, ship worldwide, run sales every now and then, maintain a high conversion rate and make sure your products are in stock, but there will be no fool-proof solution for the masses.

How to Find the Right “Gift” Search Phrases

by Gail Oliver, Online Marketing Consultant

You likely know that the gift market, depending on what you sell, can be a large source of your revenues. Therefore, wouldn’t it be nice to know the types of gifts and gift recipients that people are searching for that might carve out more a niche for you to target in this highly competitive market.

For example, did you know that there are 18,000 Google searches every month for gift for a 10-year-old-boy? Buyers are getting more specific about who they are searching for, what they are searching for and the gifting occasion allowing you to zero in on search phrases that still have a lot of traffic but not as much competition.

Comparing Google “Gift” Searches

  • Gift for teacher (33,100 monthly searches) vs Gift for teacher at end of year (12,100 monthly searches)
  • Housewarming gift (49,500 monthly searches) vs Housewarming gift for man (4,400 monthly searches)
  • Gift for woman (27,100 monthly searches) vs Gift for woman who has everything (2,900 monthly searches)

You will see that people also search this way on Etsy and Amazon. Better to get some traffic than none at all as the competition on the major search phrases is just so high.

More Search Opportunities

Adding in one little word can also open you up to new search opportunities. A lot more people are doing voice searches so the search will be phrased a little differently and in a lot more detail. For example, while there is a ton of competition for the search phrase, “Gift for wife with 14,800 searches each month, there is a lot less competition but still good traffic for “Gift for my wife” at 1,900 monthly searches. Again, you will see that people also search this way on Etsy and Amazon.

In fact, if you go over to Amazon, and use their autocomplete feature, you will see that instead of just searching on “gift for dad“, by simply adding “who after, you see all of these popular searches that customers are also using:

  • Gifts for dad who has everything
  • Gifts for dad who fishes
  • Gifts for dad who likes to cook
  • Gifts for dad who travels
  • Gifts for dad who golfs
  • Gifts for dad who grills

So instead of just going after the most popular gift search phrases that have TONS of competition, focus in and start compiling gift search phrases for more niche targets as Christmas is only 183 days away!

Easy SEO Marketing Tips for Your Small Business

seo marketing tips small businessNeed a few SEO Marketing Tips for your Small Business?

SEO (or Search Engine Optimization) is one of the most important aspects of the online business. But not everyone can afford to hire SEO services. The big retailers can, so lucky for you, your online business can “borrow” a few quick and easy tips from them.

Title Tags

Your site’s title tag (the descriptive line that appears in the browser bar at the top when people land on your home page) is very important to be found in Google. So be specific as to how people search.

A lot of times when people are searching for an item, they will use words like “buy” or “for sale” as part of their search phrase.

For example, take a look at Apple’s title tag for their online store:

Notice the use of the word “buy” and then listing their products by their exact name.

Sometimes, putting a key feature of your business that people search on, works as well.

For example, take a look at FTD’s title tag for their online store:

Quick Easy SEO Marketing Tips for Your Small Business

FTD knows that “same day flower delivery” is not only a popular request, but a popular search phrase.

Section Title Tags

Sections or category title tags are also important to be keyworded correctly for SEO. When it comes to your site’s sections or categories, again, load up the title tag with as many possible search phrases as possible that you offer.

For example, take a look at Gap’s category title tag for “jeans”:

Quick Easy SEO Marketing Tips for Your Small Business

Women don’t search “jeans“, they search a specific type, and Gap has it covered in their section title tag.

Another good example, Asos.com’s category title tag for “earrings”:

easy seo tips and tricks-1

Take a look at top sites in your segment, then take a look at popular search phrases and see how you can maximize the SEO of your title tags and section title tags.

How to Use Google to Find the Features Your Customers Want

How to Use Google to Find the Features Your Customers WantHow to Use Google to Find the Features Your Customers Want.xx
x
We all know Google is a pretty powerful search tool. Just start typing a phrase in the Google search box and their Autocomplete feature finishes your sentence for you with the most popular endings to what you are asking. What a great way to find out what your customers are looking for.
x
How to Use Google Search for Product Research
Let’s say you sell dog toys and you are looking to add new features based on what customers want. Just type, “dog toys that….” and Google will offer a variety of searches, such as:
x
  • dog toys that hold treats
  • dog toys that last
  • dog toys that can’t be destroyed
  • dog toys that are indestructible
  • dog toys that makes them think
  • dog toys that talk
This is also great for highlighting features in your product copy as well. Let’s try it again with “iPhone cases that…” and I got:
x
  • iPhone cases that charge
  • iPhone cases that light up
  • iPhone cases that hold cards
  • iPhone cases that protect the screen
  • iPhone cases that look like books
  • iPhone cases that change color
  • iPhone cases that are waterproof
It helps you to see the features that are important to iPhone users. They don’t want their phone to run out of power, they want to be able to find it in the dark, they want the phone not to get damaged. These types of features seem to be taking precedence over style.
I tried one more. I entered the phrase “baby car seats that…” and I assumed the words “are safe” would come up. It didn’t. Instead I got:
x
  • baby car seats that swivel
  • baby car seats that rotate
  • baby car seats that turn into strollers
  • baby car seats that recline
  • baby car seats that lie flat
  • baby car seats that grow with baby
So these are the most important features to new parents. The focus is definitely on convenience and functionality. Maybe they are just assuming that they are all safe.
You can also try this same strategy using with, for example, “baby car seats with…”
X
FINAL WORD: Try it with your products and services and see what comes up (you may want to clear your personal search history first so it doesn’t taint the results). It may help you better position your business to the needs of your target market.

One of the best ways to drive endless, free and qualified traffic to your business is through a blog. If done correctly, over time, one blog post can bring anywhere from 2,000 to 20,000 visits a month. And SEO has proven to convert the highest into sales, more so than email, advertising or social media. I offer a blog writing service if interested!

How to Write Your Website Title Tag

How to write your website title tagWant to know how to write your website title tag?

Just how important is that title tag for your home page that describes your overall online business? Pretty important if you want search engines to find you. When you click on a website, look at what is written in that line in the top bar above the search box. This is the title tag. What you have here will determine whether you get found in searches.

Now, if you are a big online store with a lot of backlinks, you can be quite generic in your home page’s title tag and still turn up on the front page.

Some Examples of Top Brands Title Tags
  • West Elm: Modern Furniture, Home Decor, Lighting & More”
  • Pottery Barn Kids: “Kids’ & Baby Furniture, Kids & Baby Gifts”
  • Amazon: “Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs and more” (tend to list their most best selling categories)
  • Apple Store: “Buy Apple Watch  iPad mini, iPad, iPhone 5, Macbook Pro, Mac mini and more” (gets specific with actual product names)
How To Use Your Title Tag to Get on the First Page on Google Results

Now, if you are a small business, you will need to be more specific in your shop’s home page’s title tag if you want to be noticed. You just won’t be able to compete with the larger retail chains on the more generic, popular keywords, like “designer jewelry”. You have to target in on one of your most prominent products and hope you can upsell other products once buyers are in your shop.

So maybe you want to say, “The Shop for Leather Wrap Bracelets” if these are your top seller, and, depending on how many other people are using that title tag, it has the best chance of getting your business on the first page for that search. (It should be noted that if you don’t want to get overly specific in your shop’s title tag, make sure your product category title tags are very specific, like “leather wrap bracelets”, as these are picked up by search engines as a secondary choice).

Title Tag Examples for Smaller Businesses

For example, I searched the phrase, “Cute iPhone cases“. The shop, Get Casely, came up on the first page, because one of their pages was entitled, “Cute iPhone Cases”.

FINAL WORD: The big retailers (with the exception of Apple) are not going to get product specific in their shop’s home page’s title tag, so this is where you can compete. This includes the title tag on the landing page of your blog as well. You get 70 characters, so make the most of it.

Google Search Phrases On The Rise

google search phrases on the riseIt is really important to always keep an eye on Google search phrases on the rise.

I love looking at Google Trends and seeing which search phrases are popular, but also which ones are on the rise. The great thing about Google Trends is you can customize it by country and by time period (i.e. last 7 days), so it is a great tool to keep on top of the marketplace. So I entered some product categories to see what the top rising search phrases were, for the last 3 months, worldwide.

Top Rising Google Searches for Jewelry
  • Cheap Body Jewelry
  • Hematite Jewelry
  • Amethyst Jewelry (amethyst is the February birthstone)
  • Bridesmaid Jewelry
Top Rising Google Searches for Wedding Invitations
  • Fun Wedding Invitations
  • Coral Wedding Invitations
  • Country Wedding Invitations
  • Homemade Wedding Invitations
Top Rising Google Searches for Baby Clothes
  • Baby Summer Clothes
  • Neutral Baby Clothes
  • Crochet Baby Clothes
  • Handmade Baby Clothes
  • Unisex Baby Clothes
Top Rising Google Searches for Art
  • Kitchen Art
  • African Wall Art
  • Bathroom Wall Art
  • Beach Wall Art
  • Kitchen Wall Art (Kitchen seems to be in big demand)
Top Rising Google Searches for Vintage
  • Vintage Valentines
  • Modern Vintage Boutique
  • Vintage Swimwear
  • Vintage Prom Dresses
  • Vintage Bridesmaid Dresses
  • Vintage Style Dresses
Top Rising Google Searches for Home Products
  • Decorative curtain rods
  • Decorative baskets
  • Decorative bird cages
  • Decorative wall hooks
  • Decorative ceiling tiles

FINAL WORD: When you look at searches in lesser time frames, like the last 3 months, it helps you to see popular cyclical searches, such as Valentine’s, and also how far in advance people start searching for different events or seasons. For example, people are already searching for summer items. Use Google Trends to help you find where that next opportunity lies for your online business.
