Galentines Day Marketing Ideas

Need some Galentines Day marketing ideas for your small business?

First of all, Valentine’s Day is the day before Valentine’s Day (so, February 13th), and it is a holiday that started on the TV show Parks and Recreation. It is a way for women who are single to celebrate being single, and not feel left out by the couple-centric Valentine’s Day holiday.

However, a lot of businesses like retail stores, spas, florists, restaurants and even travel agencies are now finding ways to benefit from this holiday, so that these two days in February cover off everyone with a prime marketing opportunity.

Galentines Day Marketing Ideas

  • For example, if you are promoting buying gifts for him or her, also have a category in your online store that is for buying a gift for your single friend.
  • Your restaurant could host a Galentine’s dinner special for single female friends to get together. This is a great way to get a group reservation, which is much more beneficial than just the two people in a couple’s reservation.
  • You could add tshirts or mugs that say, “Happily Uncoupled” or “Happily Single” to your online store.
  • If you’re a travel agency, and Galentine’s happens to fall on a weekend, it is the perfect opportunity to promote a girl’s weekend getaway.
  • If you’re a spa, offer a special spa offer for the day, and the more girlfriends they bring, the more the price goes down.

Any way you spin it, it is also a great angle to get some additional business, not to mention publicity and endear your business to this segment of the population.

5 Ideas to Give Your Business a Boost in January

by Gail Oliver, Online Marketing Consultant

A new year is always a great opportunity to try new ways to market your business!

  1. If you sell art, wedding rings, wine products or pet products, then take advantage of upcoming editorial opportunities such as National Inspire Your Heart with Art (Jan 31), National Wedding Ring Day (Feb 3), National Drink Wine Day (Feb 18) and National Love Your Pet Day (Feb 20) to get free publicity for your products (or you can have me write a publicity pitch for you!).
  2. Google ads (formerly Google Adwords) are a better alternative for small businesses than Google Shopping ads. You cannot set the bid rates for Google Shopping ads, so unless you are selling $2,000 rings, not many sellers can afford a high cost per click, because the revenue return on the ad will not justify the ad cost. However, you can set the bid rate for a Google ad, and you can even localize it to just appear in searches from specific geographic regions, making it even more affordable.5 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR BUSINESS A BOOST IN JANUARY
  3. January is typically all about sales, so have a HUGE one. I am not talking 20% or 25%, I’m talking 50 to 70% if you want success. It does not have to be on everything, just a select group of products or services. If it leads to acquiring new customers who might then become repeat customers, it is worth it.
  4. If you sell higher priced products, offering a dollar amount off will tend to have a higher conversion rate than a percentage off offer. For example, if you are selling a $200 ring and ran a campaign for $50 off and a second campaign for 25% off (both arrive at the same amount) the $50 off will do better, mainly because buyers are attracted to the larger number, assuming it is a better deal. This does not hold true if you are selling lower priced items. If you have a $15 product and you are offering campaigns of  either 25% off or $3.75 off, the 25% campaign will do better.
  5. While it is not a good idea to email customers who did not opt in, there is nothing stopping you from sending snail mail (a fairly minimal cost, and they have already bought from you, so conversion rates should be high). Therefore, consider mailing all customers who purchased from you in October, November and December a thank you note with a special discount offer; but tie it to a quantity to make it worthwhile and give it a deadline i.e. As a thank you, purchase any 3 items (before February 1st, 2020) and get 25% off.

Why You Need a Marketing Strategy Planning Template

If your business is struggling to make sales, then you really need to implement a Marketing plan, and a Marketing Strategy Plan Template will help you do this. Therefore, I recommend my best-selling Marketing Plan Template printable download.

I spent weeks developing and creating this comprehensive marketing plan template for you to fill in. It will definitely help you develop and execute your marketing mix, even if you know nothing about marketing.

marketing planner template pdf

What is Marketing?

And better yet, how to write a marketing plan? In a nutshell, marketing is all the various ways you can promote your business… and that takes a mix of tactics in the form of a marketing plan.

Why Do You Need a Marketing Plan?

A marketing plan is like a road map. You follow it to get where you want to be. Without a road map, you will be all over the place, and likely going in the wrong direction, which is waste of time and money.

What are the Steps Involved in Creating a Marketing Plan

The main marketing plan steps, especially for a marketing plan for a business plan, are to start with:

  • Goals
  • Budget
  • Marketing Mix
  • Implementation
  • Tracking

Start with Your Marketing Mixready made marketing plans

A marketing mix typically consists of the following marketing components:

  • Advertising
  • Publicity
  • SEO
  • Social Media
  • Content Marketing (blogging or articles for third parties)
  • Co-Marketing
  • Sales Promotions
  • Email Marketing
  • Events

Now, you do not have to do all of these things, but if your current marketing is not working, you might want to think about shaking things up, and trying some new tactics.

Why Your Plan Needs a Diverse Marketing Mix

If you are focusing on just one of the tactics above, does it not make sense that if you added another tactic, you might double your traffic and sales?

This is why a wide and diverse marketing mix is always an optimal strategy. There is a real danger in using just one tactic to drive traffic and sales, because if something unexpected happens to that tactic, the bottom can fall out of your business overnight.

For example, I consult for a lot of e-commerce businesses, especially Etsy shops. Unforeseen and sudden changes to Etsy’s search algorithm and an increase in Etsy ad bid rates caused problems for a lot of shops who were dependent on just one or both of these tactics, bringing their sales to a halt. So don’t make yourself vulnerable and make sure that you have several streams bringing traffic to your site.

It has been proven, that the top 3 ways to drive traffic and sales are:

  • SEO
  • email marketing
  • advertising

Social media can drive a lot of traffic, but as I have said many times on my blog, it does not always convert as highly into sales. In fact, you might want to read my post, Proof that Social Media Doesn’t Always Convert Into Sales.

Your Specific Marketing Strategy

Now, you also have to think about your overall marketing strategy. For example, if you are a brand new product or business, maybe your goal is to just create brand awareness. In that case, the best tactics would be Publicity and Social Media, especially since both are free, which helps when just starting out.

There are also tactics within tactics. For example, maybe you want to implement tactics of organic SEO traffic as well as organic social media traffic. If these tactics are working for you, then you can increase your ad budget and add paid SEO traffic and paid social media traffic.

Set Realistic Marketing Goals

Your Marketing Strategy Plan Template needs to first set realistic marketing goals and objectives. For example, if part of your social media marketing strategy plan is to increase social media followers in one month from 100 to 10,000, that would be quite a challenge. It is possible, but you would need something really clever to go viral. Increasing followers by 10 to 15% month over month is a little more realistic.

Have a Healthy Marketing Budget

If your sales have plateaued, it is likely because you are not spending enough (or possibly anything) on marketing your business. Remember, your competition is spending money – running ads, doing sales promotions – and they are going to take away your market share very quickly.

A reasonable scale is spending 8 to 15% of your desired annual sales on marketing. I had a client recently who was spending $2,000 a month on advertising and it was bringing them in $15,000 a month in sales. Since advertising cost to revenue tends to stay proportional, I recommended that they double their ad budget to $4,000 and see if this now brings them $40,000 in revenue.

Advertising is particularly important in the beginning, when you are trying to establish market share. Once you acquire a significant customer base that you can get repeat business from, then you can cut back on advertising if need be.

Do More of What’s Working, Fix What Isn’t

You have to spend time reviewing your marketing successes and failures.

For example, if running a sale resulted in 200 new customers that you can now get repeat business from, even though it meant you charged less money for your products/services, was it not worth it to grow your customer base?

Another example. If your ad costs were consistently more than 25% of the revenue they brought in (which is not a great return), do you just drop the ads, or do you make changes to the ad campaign? Maybe your headline or ad creative wasn’t captivating enough. Maybe the ads are targeting the wrong demographic or customer location. Maybe your online ads just need to eliminate negative keywords – there are so many factors that can impact online advertising success. So before you drop your ads, see what you can fix.

You might want to read my Quick Advertising Tip to see if this is your issue.

Conduct a Monthly Marketing Audit

Once a month, it is a good idea to audit your marketing. I’ve spoken before about doing a monthly marketing audit before on my blog, but it involves setting goals for each of your strategies such as advertising, social media, publicity, and then reviewing them to see the results.

If the results are successful, you keep doing the tactic, maybe even expand it to other products or services. However, if the results are not successful, do you drop the tactic altogether, or you do modify it.

For example, your Instagram giveaway was unsuccessful in expanding your email list. Do you try it again with a new creative that gets more attention? Do you improve the offer? Do you make it easier to enter? Do you boost the post? Again, it all depends on what you set as your marketing goals and objectives for the month, and whether or not they were achieved.

Use Success Trackers

Finally, your marketing plan needs success trackers. Much like the audit above, these are monthly pages where you can see how your marketing is working for you. It lets you track the growth of your email list from month to month, your blog followers, your social media followers, and obviously your sales and customers.

One recent customer email stated:

“I can’t tell you how happy I am with this marketing plan. It is sooo thorough and well organized. A few months ago I paid a ton of money for a ‘personalized marketing strategy’ and it didn’t include a fraction of what is included here. I was so disappointed and sad to have wasted so much money.”

My planner pages will help you analyze, strategize, plan and track your marketing success, and I cover all of the tactics mentioned above in detail.

Try This “Discount on Discount” Sales Trick

An online retailer had an interesting sales promotion this week. The offer was another 25% off their already 40% off sale. I have to be honest, I jumped on it. It made it seem like I was getting 65% off, but if you do the math it was more like 55%, which is still good, don’t get me wrong.

But there was something about a discount on a discount that made it feel like it was too good to pass up. Plus, it was one-day only and they indicated certain items would sell out. All of these things together got me to act quickly.

So give it a try on some of your sales merchandise that you are really trying to liquidate (if your profit margins allow for this deep a discount).

Retail Arbitage Could Be Your New Side Hustle

Have you considered Retail Arbitrage as a business idea or side hustle.

According to Ecomdash, this means buying up sales stock, especially at this time of the year, and reselling online is a profitable business. You cannot do this on sites like Etsy, but you can on eBay and your own e-commerce site. Worth a try?

Love this Retail Marketing Idea from Sephora

Are you the kind of shopper that typically wants a sales person to help you OR do you wish to be left alone?

Well the retail store Sephora came up with the perfect solution. The store allows shoppers to choose a red or black basket: Red means “I’d like help” and black means “no thanks.” Brilliant!

5. Conversion of Commercial Spaces – With many office buildings sitting empty because workers are staying home, this means a growing need to be able to convert these spaces from commercial offices to residential living spaces. This would be an ideal contracting business to specialize in.

6. Bungee Workout Classes – Bungee fitness was one of the breakout searches of 2023. You can offer these bungee workout sessions in the park and save on space rental fees.

7. Training for Older Workers – Employers have to train their older employees in new skills such as social media, artificial intelligence and more, so offer this service to local companies.

8. Pop Up Office Rentals – Offer a service to find temporary office space for employers in need, as “office space rental agency” was a top search last year.

11. Therapy Dog Trainer – Consider specializing and becoming a therapy dog trainer. In the USA alone, there are currently 500,000 service dogs helping everyone from seniors to children, so it is a growing field full of opportunity.

12. Amazon Virtual Assistant – More and more people are selling on Amazon, but they do not have the time or expertise to get a shop up and running quickly. This is currently the most in-demand service on Fiverr.

13. Neighborhood Websites – “Near Me” Google searches are at an all time high, so a neighborhood website funded by local advertisers is a great way to connect people with local services as well as their neighbors.

14. Soundproofing – “How to Soundproof” and “How to Install Acoustic Wall Panels” were two top searches in 2023, so you can either offer a service and/or the product itself.

15. Upsized House Plans  for Boomers – Believe it or not, more baby boomers are upsizing their homes rather than downsizing as they want more space to accommodate live-in elderly parents and out of town children and grandchildren. As a result, the type of house has changed where they require more than one master bedroom, wheel chair accessibility, and single level with a first floor owner’s suite.

16. Errand Runner / Personal Assistant – Working couples, particularly those with kids, are overwhelmed with their ever growing daily to do list, from picking up dry cleaning to grocery shopping to meal planning to registering kids for activities to making doctor’s appointments to planning birthday parties to buying gifts for other kids parties, – it goes on and on.

17. Personal Sales Associate – What if you could offer to sell other people’s big-ticket items for them, such as like cars, boats, RVs, jewelry, and the like, and you simply get paid a commission or a finder’s fee (your job is to find and scrutinize all buyers).

18. Bargain Hunter – If you are really good at finding the best local deals on groceries, furniture, travel, restaurants,  many people would pay for a service that would send them texts or email alerts on the best deals in their city for the things they sign up for.

19. Funeral Officiant – There is huge demand for wedding officiants but just as many people want a someone to officiate a funeral (also known as certified celebrants) and the average rate you can charge is $200 to $500 per service.

20. Resume Writer – New grads have trouble selling themselves to prospective employers, so if you have a flair for writing and sales, offer to write resumes and cover letters. By the way, I offer this service for both resumes and LinkedIn Summaries (you get the benefit of a marketer!).

21. Elderly Walker /Sitter – A lot of working people have elderly parents living with them that need to be checked on throughout the day, maybe even have a conversation with them or take them for a walk. There are some social agencies that offer this service for free, but they are backed up with requests and hurt by a lack of volunteers, making it ideal for a private service offering.

 22. AI Teachers – Since July 2022, searches for information on artificial intelligence has grown by 4,000% so show people how they can use it to make money or improve their life with workshops and classes.

23. Language Conversationalist – Many people need to learn a second language as part of a job requirement. Therefore, if you are fluent in a second language offer conversation training whereby you simply meet the person for coffee once or twice a week and speak in your native tongue. You could easily charge $20 to $25 an hour as their company will sometimes pick up the fee.

24. Makeup Artist – Whether it is a wedding, prom or even a Halloween party, there is a lot of demand for a professional makeup artist who will come right to your home. In fact, the search “Personal Glam Squad” has exploded in the last two years. Be sure to check out my Marketing Plan for Beauty Products.

25. Seasonal House Prepping – If you live in a cold climate, handle people’s fall and spring house prep checklist for a pretty good per diem rate.

26. College Researcher – Is your child lost when it comes to applying to college – where to go, what to study, what they need to take in high school for particular disciplines, where to find grant money, etc. Save all the helicopter parents out there the trouble and take this on yourself by offering this service.

27. Pop-up Store Liaison – Again, act as a liaison between small businesses who wanted a popup retail presence just for a weekend or week and the lessor or realtor for the property. You make your money by getting a piece of the commission.

28. Wellness Coach – You’ve heard of Life Coaches, but a Wellness Coach focuses purely on your physical and mental health choices and searches for a “certified” one have skyrocketed over the past year.

29. Pet Nail Trimmer – On average, most dogs need to have their names trimmed every 1 to 2 months. So learn how to do it properly and then you can ask a local pet shop if you can hold trimming sessions in their shop every weekend. Typical rate is $10 per dog for about 5 minutes work.

30. Embroiderer – The personalization market is huge as everyone wants their name or monogram on everything they wear and own. An embroidery machine costs anywhere from $400 to $1,200 so you could pay this off fairly quickly, especially if you target companies and sports teams.

31. Mural Painter – So when I say mural painter, I don’t mean the murals on nursery walls, although that is a good business, but I mean murals for local companies, especially in their boardroom, foyers or on the side exterior walls of their business as free advertising.

32. Leather Repairer  – Leather furniture is expensive, and finding someone to repair it is a lost art. Lots of demand, little competition.

33. Sleep Expert – It is believed that between 30% and 48% of older adults suffer from insomnia. It is becoming a serious health issue, so a sleep expert who could help solve their problem would be a service worth paying for.

34. Spiritual Awakening Trip Planner – More and more people are investing in their mental health, so they like to seek guidance in far off exotic places that have a tradition of helping with spiritual healing. A great business idea is to be a planner specializing in these types of excursions, especially targeting people travelling on their own.

35. Personal Gift Shopper – Offer to be their personal gift shopper who also hunts for the best gifts at the lowest prices, saying them money so that it becomes a service that is really worth paying for.

36. Cabinet Refinisher – Home buyers feel badly about ripping out kitchen or bathroom cabinets due to the expense and the waste. A lot of the time, the cabinets could be refinished, so specialize in this one area, for both residential and commercial businesses.

37. Put Up take Down Christmas Lights –  Offer a put up and take down holiday lights service, even offering to supply the lights so they don’t have to worry about storage.

38. Niche Influencer – This small business idea simply uses the power of Instagram. Now, there are “influencers” taste testing Trader Joe products and telling you which ones they like, and making money doing it. So find a hot market niche whereby people want to know more about the product before they buy it, a product they can’t touch, smell, feel or taste online.

Best Rental Small Business Ideas 2024

39. Luxury House Rental – Millennials do not want the burden of owning a house, but they still want luxury accommodations and have no problem paying the rent for an Instagram-able abode, even if it is small. So, find a small duplex or tri-plex and redo it based on the top décor trends you find on Pinterest, and then rent it out to millennials for thousands of dollars a month.

40. Camper Rental – If you have a camper you do not use all year, why not rent it out, sort of like an AirBnB for campers.

Small Business Ideas 2022

41. Leisure Boat Rental – People cannot afford all the toys but it doesn’t mean they don’t want to enjoy them. Therefore, if you live near water, purchase a boat merely to be rental to those who want it for a weekend excursion, party on the water, wedding or other aquatic event.

42. Clothing Rentals – Millennials do not like the fact that cheap throwaway clothes are filling up the landfills, so renting clothes seems like a more eco-friendly option. Sites like Rent the Runway have been around since 2009, but more niche rental markets could take off, such as clothes for men, children, prom or formal wear.

43. Student Furniture Store – A student furniture store is basically a second hand store, but you could fix up the pieces for them and get a little bit higher of a price. You wouldn’t even need to have the store up for long, just a pop-up store from early-August to late-September.

44. Barn Pop Up Store – There is a farm near where I live that every fall rents out its barn to a 8 week long Christmas market. Maybe you have a structure that could work as a pop store for a variety of different rotating vendors and you simply charge each vendor a table fee.

Small Scale Furniture – Apartment, dorm room, tiny house or she shed, more than half of Americans would consider living in a home that’s less than 600 square feet, according to a survey done by the National Association of Home Builders. Even Amazon is selling tiny house kits. Therefore, start a business strictly in furnishing these small spaces with small scaled furniture and décor.

46. Comfort Clothing – Searches for “comfort clothing” have quadrupled in the last 5 years, so start a store specializing in this. Check out my Marketing Plan for Fashion Brands.

47. Home Energy Expert – A service whereby you can come in and evaluate a home and provide ways for the home owner to better insulate and cut costs is invaluable, not to mention it can also qualify the home owner for various government rebates.

Star and Moon Gazing Events – There has been growing interest in the moon and stars after the eclipse in August 2017 drew such large gazing crowds, and, as such people have been developing events around the monthly full moon from wine hosting events to tarot readings. Also see idea #54.

49. Netflix Cafe – With so many streaming services showing up on the market, no one can afford to sign up for them all, so a café or bookstore that wants to offer the ability to come in and watch on a personal screen or even hold hosting parties in a large party room, might be worthwhile.

50. Monthly Subscription Box for Teachers – We keep hearing how so many teachers have to pay for their own supplies, so why not start an affordable subscription box service for teachers with lesson plans, room decorations and supplies.

51. Monthly Subscription Box for Seniors – A lot of seniors are shut-ins and love the thought of receiving mail. So set up a subscription box services small business that their far away children (or even grandchildren) can purchase for them with monthly items they would like and need.

52. Mystery Boxes – Mystery boxes have become a new form of entertainment at 60,000 Google searches a month, so how can you ignore the demand? You can offer mystery boxes as a mail subscription service or you can do it as a service for other companies. You would have the most success to focus on hobbies and interests, such as mystery boxes for gamers, readers, makeup, and jewelry as these are the top searches.

53. Vinyl Art Posters – A lot of stores make vinyl wall decals that are small graphics or text that adhere to the wall. However, if you could take an actual art print or poster and make it vinyl so that it is essentially peel and stick, you would have a hit on your hands with the apartment dwellers and college dorm room market, who really need that peel and stick artwork capability.

54. Solar Eclipse Glasses – Did you know that when there was a solar eclipse a few months back, searches for “Where can I find solar eclipse glasses?” soared? Believe it or not, there are only 160 listings on Amazon and another solar eclipse is coming in April 2024.

Why Trader Joe’s is a Marketing Star

Trader Joes is a marketing powerhouse food store. This article from Vox shows how Trader Joe’s knows how to take advantage of the biggest food purchases of the year, which is fall through to early February.

They start by stocking the largest and most diverse products featuring the hottest fall food trend: pumpkin spice. They follow this with foods tailored for all of the big holidays: back-to-school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s. Holidays sell!
