3 All-New Side Hustle Business Ideas

Everyone is looking to make a little extra money on the side these days, so I found three all-new side hustle business ideas you might want to consider.

Side Hustle Business Idea #1

The other day I noticed someone visiting one of my neighbors and picking up bunches of hydrangea flowers. My neighbor’s yard is lined in hydrangeas trees (which are rapid growers), and it turns out, she sells them to brides who pick them up on the day of the wedding. Typical price is $6 per stem.

Now, you could take this idea even further and purchase a small greenhouse for your yard and grow seasonal floral items, like poinsettias for Christmas or mums for fall. You could sell them to local stores and farmer’s markets.

I have a relative who drives a city bus, but is thinking of retiring. However, he still wanted to do some part-time work using his driving skills. I mentioned that there is a huge backlog of teens trying to get driving lessons as many driving schools couldn’t operate during the pandemic. So I suggested he consider becoming a private driving instructor.

I also mentioned the possibility of being a “private” driver. When we were staying at a hotel years back, we had trouble getting a taxi to go to a destination that was about 45 minutes away. So the concierge recommended using their private driver service. The driver was not an employee of the hotel, but had their own business and the hotel just used them as needed. So for a little more money, we got a luxury car ride to our destination.

Side Hustle Business Idea #3

I had another neighbor who owned a utility trailer, the kind you could attach to a hitch and haul small stuff. Everyone on the street was constantly borrowing this trailer. So, if you have one, consider renting it out for a daily or weekly rate. It is particularly in big demand this time of year when college kids are heading off to school. The rate is around $25 a day, higher if demand is great and trailers are scarce.

Try This Easy Instagram Challenge Idea

Have you thought about trying an Instagram challenge contest?

I have to be honest, when I see businesses offering contests where you simply enter to win, I always think my chances are so-so, so why bother.

But, if the brand was to make the contest a challenge that I might be good at, then it might be worth my while.

HERE’S MY IDEA

For example, on your Instagram account, try running a contest whereby people have to submit an amazing fall photo from their town that you will post to your Instagram. The photo that gets the most likes, wins.

It works out well for you, because it is a chance for one of your posts to get a lot of likes.

The great thing about fall is that it offers so many opportunities, from seasonal trends like pumpkin spice to Back to School to Halloween to Thanksgiving. Think of a challenge for all of them!

Best Online Side Hustles for Teachers

best side hustles for teachers passive income side job online
Are you a teacher looking to make more money in your spare time? One of the best side hustles is to sell Study Guides as digital downloads.

You could also sell lesson plans, practice tests, and other educational materials as long as they are your own original content.

For example, there are two shops on Etsy making thousands of dollars a month selling their study notes from nursing college: Nurse in the Making and  RNExplained.

Their study note products range in price anywhere from $50 to over $200, and they are getting it!

What seems to be resonating with buyers is the realistic handwritten, note-like layout that they use. Being a teacher, I’m sure you have study notes like this.

Keep reading and I’ll tell you what and how to sell them, but here are some ways to package them:

Educational Downloads for Teachers to Sell

Click to download on Etsy

Below are some of the most searched educational materials:

  • Study Notes for Students in Teacher’s College
  • Home Schooling Lesson Plans
  • Preschool Lesson Plans
  • Math Practice Tests for GED
  • Math Games
  • Math Activities for Preschoolers
  • Middle School Math Worksheets
  • Elementary School English Worksheets
  • High School Classroom PowerPoint Slides
  • High School Art Curriculum
  • Essay Writing Worksheets

→ By the way teachers, check out my downloads for your classroom at OurBestLaidPlans.

Educational Products That Are Trending

Nursing Study Notes on Etsy

You can also look at Google Trends to see the type of educational materials people are looking for. For example, this past week these were top searches, and all of these could be How-To Guides you could quickly draw up:

  • How to Teach Phonics?

  • How to Teach Reading Comprehension?

  • How to Teach Sight Words?

  • How to Teach Phonemic Awareness?

  • How to Teach Prosody in Reading?

How and Where to Sell

If you wish to sell your study notes and lesson plans digitally all you have to do is scan your notes and turn them into a PDF for customers to download, and then sell on:

  • Etsy
  • Gumroad
  • Teachers Pay Teachers

Click to download on Etsy

If you also wish to sell them in printed form, you can do this through a print fulfilment company like Printify, where they will handle everything, even the shipping. But you still need a storefront like Etsy or Gumroad.

If you have no idea how to start your side hustle, I highly recommend downloading my best-selling  How to Start a Small Business Planner.

It will help you easily get your business quickly up and running with step-by-step planning pages and checklists with everything you need to do. It even includes a hyperlinked list of print fulfillment companies and an Etsy set up checklist saving you valuable time.

The possibilities are endless, and you likely already have the materials. If you have certain knowledge, study or learning tips that work, why not sell them!

Easy Ways to Improve Your Small Business SEO

small business seoAre you looking for ways to improve your small business SEO? Search is still the number one traffic generator for most small businesses, so your SEO strategy should be your first priority.

Small Business SEO Ideas

I have talked many times about how important it is to optimize for search phrases that use prepositions, pronouns, and determiners such as “with” “that” and “for” as this is how people search for products and services.

Product Business SEO Ideas

Let’s say that you sell backpacks. Then you go to Google autocomplete, type in “backpacks with……” and repeat for “for” and “that”. For most product searches, “best” is a popular adjective that you might want to include as well. These are the actual Google searches that fill down:

“With” Searches

  • Backpack with wheels
  • Backpack with laptop compartment
  • Backpack with water bottle pocket
  • Backpack with lunch bag
  • Backpack with shoe compartment

“Best” and “For” Searches

  • Best backpack for travel
  • Best backpack for business travel
  • Best backpack for kindergarten
  • Best backpack for college

“That” Searches

  • Backpacks that open like a suitcase
  • Backpacks that fit in overhead
  • Backpacks that open from the back
  • Backpacks that fit a 16 inch laptop

Not only does this help you see how people are searching, but also what they are searching, which is also ideal for gathering new product ideas.

Service Business SEO Ideas

What if you are selling services as opposed to products. A lot of these same keywords can be used to find the top searches for what you are offering. For example:

“For” Searches

  • Catering service for birthday party
  • Catering service for office
  • Catering service for wedding
  • Catering service for 15 people

“With” Searches

  • Catering service with venue
  • Catering service with price list
  • Catering service with servers

Professional Business SEO Ideas

The same can be said for professionals. “Best” is always popular, along with “who“. For local professionals, “near me” is always a go-to search phrase. i.e. Plumber Near Me (be sure to read this post of mine,Try This Trick to Find a Local Business Idea.

“Best” and “For” Searches

  • Best realtor for selling land
  • Best realtor for rentals
  • Best realtor for bad credit

“Who” Searches

  • Realtors who help find rentals
  • Realtors who sell mobile homes
  • Realtors who specialize in investment properties

So if you want to improve your SEO, try to find popular search phrases using these words. Be sure to visit my Shopify stores for a wide variety of my business & marketing downloads.

Halloween Marketing Ideas

halloween marketing ideasLooking for some Halloween marketing ideas?

As I mentioned in my post, Your August Marketing To Do List, Halloween has become the second biggest retail buying occasion. Last year, spending on costumes, decorating and other Halloween items was more than US$10 billion.

Therefore, I thought I would come up with some creative Ideas for all types of small businesses.

Restaurant & Coffee Shop Halloween Marketing Ideas
  • If you own a coffee shop or restaurant, offer a Halloween theme drink (or entire dining experience) for the entire month. A good example is how Starbucks and Disney World offer Halloween menu items every October.
  • If you own a Mexican restaurant, considering offering a Day of the Dead (or Día de Muertos or Día de los Muertos) special dinner, even encouraging guests to dress up for it (even though it will fall after Halloween this year on November 2nd). It can become an annual event.
  • Work with local attractions that offer “ghost walks” to offer a dining and ghost walk experience package, particularly to guests staying at local hotels.
Retail & Ecommerce Halloween Marketing Ideas
  • halloween marketing ideasIf you own a retail store, decorate your store windows for Halloween, much like people do for Christmas. For your online store, add Halloween banners, categories and shop sections. Give the shop section a cool name like, “Halloween Haven”, the way Grandin Road does.
  • Offer your regular products in Halloween colors, scents and flavours, like Bath and Bodyworks does with their Perfect Pumpkin Hand Soap, so it becomes part of your Halloween decor.
  • Turn your store shopping bags into a limited number of keepsake Halloween bags that kids can take Trick or Treating, with free advertising for you year after year.
Travel Agency Halloween Marketing Ideas
  • If you’re a travel agency, consider offering Halloween weekend experiences, such as to cities with amusement parks that are holding scare events, or even far away ones, like Dracula’s Halloween Party in Romania (Transylvania).halloween marketing ideas
Beauty Business Halloween Marketing Ideas
  • Halloween makeup is one of the top Google searches every October, so if you sell cosmetics, create a DIY Halloween Makeup Kit to sell.
  • If you own a beauty salon, offer Halloween makeup services and/or classes for additional revenue during October.
Bakery Business Marketing Ideas

Create a DIY Halloween Cookie Decorating Kit (one of the top searches last year) and/or a DIY Haunted House Decorating Kit (like a gingerbread house).

New Halloween Traditions

Traditions normally associated with Christmas, have now carried over to Halloween, including Halloween advent calendars, Halloween count downs, Halloween wreaths, Halloween stockings, ugly Halloween sweaters, Halloween gnomes and family Halloween pajamas. In fact, searches for Halloween pajamas are up over 350%. These new products pose new opportunities for you.

Other Halloween Business Ideashalloween marketing ideas

A great business idea is a service that decorates houses, businesses, store windows and parties for Halloween. The supplies are your property that you put up, take down and store throughout the year.

SEO Tips

Something as simple as adding the current year to your keywords can help your SEO, as people do search this way. i.e. Fall 2022, Back to School 2022, Halloween 2022, etc.

Create Social Media Posts

Post a reel to Instagram (as it is the most viewed type of content) of a quick pan overview of all of your new fall 2022 collection #reelsofinstagram.

Don’t forget about Pinterest, because it is still used as a search engine by millions of people. So create a Pinterest board titled with a long tail search phrase (4 to 6 words) related to what you sell and even make it seasonal i.e. The Best Fall Sweaters for 2022. Then make sure that every pin you pin to it, also has that long tail search phrase (or at least the keywords) in the pin title and description.

Be sure to read my post, Social Media Ideas for August, and my post Creating Social Media Posts Using Canva.

Halloween Products & Services

Halloween has become the second biggest retail buying occasion. Last year, spending on costumes, decorating and other Halloween items was more than US$10 billion. In fact, it is so big that many retailers have already launched their Halloween collections, which might inspire you:

Examples of Engaging Product Descriptions

how to write product descriptions examplesNeed some engaging product description examples?

I love writing all types of marketing copy, but product descriptions are some of my favorites. If this is something you struggle with, below are some examples of copy I have written that might inspire you when writing your own.

I personally do not like it when the writing gets too flowery, as the customer still has to understand what you are selling. I always like to follow an engaging opening paragraph with bullet points of the main features, for those who don’t always want to read a big block of text.

I also always like to end with a call to action getting people to contact you with questions, and a thank you for shopping or visiting the store.
